Because they have a probation officer following them at all times. They curse at the teacher. The teachers have the low expectation that this student will not make it through the end of the semester. Not many would bat an eye or even listen to the student's story. That is something Erin Gruwell never dared to do. She gave students like Maria a chance to tell their story. Gave them real life stories that allow them to find something and someone who deals with a similar situation they are facing.
