Overview: P.E.

Constructivism can be applied in different ways. Especially in P.E. where knowledge is not everything to master the task. It requires hands-on activities and practice. For example, we practice the pass in volleyball. First, explain them what motions they have to do, how it works and everything. Then, let your students work in pairs. One practicing while the other is observing his peer. In the end, they give peer reviews and feedback, what they did well and what they can do better next time.

That's a hard one for P.E. Well, create a fitness plan is also P.E. but the students do not really engage in physical activities.
One could be "how to increase my speed through technique". This is more than just knowledge. They have to do research what technique professional sprinters use and then they have to try it. And for this they must practice. In the end, the students should be able to determine if they progressed and if the speed increased.

What comes in my mind with problem based learning in P.E. is analyzing games and focus on the loosing team.
For Example, the teacher provides a chosen sequence of a game in basketball or soccer or whatever. The students analyze why the opponent team scored. As soon as they found the problem, they come up with ideas how to do better. And then, they try it and play it out.

Same as project-based learning. I want to engage the students in physical activities. The inquiry model works easier for theoretical questions like "Why is it important to be physically active?"
What could work is to let the students write down, what kind of sports they want to learn. One condition, it must be new for them. If not, all choose their favorite and there si no learning process.

What I think about here is fitness. When I teach my students how to work out properly and correct, they can use this knowledge in the future. Maybe when they go to the gym or they can bring it to the team they play for in their free time.

I go back to my volleyball lesson. Make groups of four and create a circuit with different stops. On each stop, they have instructions how to learn the pass, the smash or the serve. They practice and give peer reviews. In the end, let them play and practice their gained motions and knowledge.

I think this applies more in the later school years. P.E. students can use their skills and knowledge, witch they gained in school, to coach younger kids. They engage in leadership work and get used to it. When I think back, I was a tennis coach in 9th grade.
