Thesis:

Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights conveys the theme of payback and revenge leading to induration through byronic hero, Heathcliff.

TS 1: Healthcliff’s self-reliance and unrepentance gives the reader visual context of his behavior.

Evidence:

~ Heathcliff gives Lockwood a cold shoulder and is inhospitable towards him at the beginning of the book.

~ Heathcliff locked second generation Catherine in an upstairs bedroom until she was pressured to marry Linton.

TS 2: The Byronic hero traits featured in Wuthering Heights connect to induration being the result of payback and revenge.

Evidence:

~ Heathcliff catches Hareton when he falls but he regrets saving his life.

~ Heathcliff abuses second generation Catherine to get revenge on Edgar.

TS 3: Throughout the novel, Heathcliff demonstrates his wild and uncivilized personality.

TS 1: Heathcliff’s role as a Byronic Hero is highlighted through his moody and self reliant character.
Example 1: moody - Heathcliff treats Lockwood in an unwelcoming way when he enters Wuthering Heights.
Example 2: self-reliant - Heathcliff denies Nelly’s offer of help before he dies (when she asks if he would like her to send for a pastor).

TS 2: Unresolved rage can lead to anger and soon a desire for revenge, as is demonstrated in Wuthering Heights.
Example 1: His anger towards Cathy marrying someone else leads him to develop a revenge plot.
Example 2: His anger towards Hindley’s cruel treatment of him makes him want to get even with his brother.

TS 3: Heathcliff’s actions coincide with the theme of the book and his role as a Byronic Hero.
Example 1: Because Heathcliff relies only on himself, before he dies, he becomes emotionally distant and blocks Nelly and the others out, as self reliant is one of the traits of a Byronic Hero.
Example 2: The plot is forwarded by Heathcliff wanting to get revenge on Cathy for “betraying her heart” because of his general moodiness and disregard for Cathy’s feelings and choices.
