Jamia Lott: 28th Thesis “It is certainly possible that when the money clinks in the bottom of the chest avarice and greed increase; but when the church offers intercession, all depends on the will of God.” (Thesis 28) To explicate what Luther wrote, he knew that the priests in the church were greedy for wealth/money. The priest desired wealth; they decided to make more money with intercessions to increase their values(social status, material things, or power) for themselves. Luther knew that what they were doing was not to honor or be with God in the end but to use him while living. Luther also knew that the act should be with people that honor God, not the people that exploited his name.

"All those who believe themselves certain of their own salvation by means of letters of indulgence, will be eternally damned, together with their teachers". As the rich were paying for indulgences in hopes of evading punishment, and the church was selling these indulgences for their benefit, it was morally wrong and went against what the church was supposed to believe in and stand for. People couldn’t buy themselves out of punishment for their sins and the church shouldn’t have sold them. The only way out of punishment was to have faith; to believe God forgave you. By indulging in indulgences to escape punishment, those who had partaken would be heavily punished.

In the Catholic Church indulgence is when a member of the church is forgiven for their crime(s) or sin(s). In this message Martin Luther says that some popes do not preach the word of god in some churches, and that they preach indulgences instead. This means that Martin Luther believes that pope's are talking about God's forgiveness and how even if you do something bad they can be forgiven for it. The popes use this argument a lot when they are exposed for doing things that they are not supposed to do such as having children. Martin Luther is trying to express how these popes are fake and enemies of God because they do not preach what they are supposed to, which is the word of God.

No one is sure of the reality of his own contrition, much less of receiving plenary forgiveness.

Because people buy indulgences, they can't truly be remorseful of their sins because they can always pay the priest to forgive them. They are unaware that the indulgences don't actually forgive their sins, so receiving forgiveness from the priest doesn't actually release them of their sins.
