The Formula for Success

The Formula for Success is broken and backwards!

“If I work harder, I’ll be more successful and if I’m more successful, then I’ll be happier!

In today’s society, that is a common phrase. The common knowledge of hard work leading to success and success leading to happiness is a false conception. If happiness is on the other side of success, it would never be achieved because of our constant change in what success looks like. Happiness is a mindset. As stated by Richard Burnett, most of our attention is in “thinking mode” and automatically fixating our attention on the wrong or the negative. In doing so, this ultimately can lead to anxiety and/or depression. Burnett defined mindfulness as: being able to recognize when thinking becomes overthinking and remediation. Being mindful will aid in getting our minds into a good, positive space. Our brains perform better in positive spaces!

Learning includes the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domain. By insuring that all three are incorporated within a lesson the student’s learning experience will become more diverse and will meet various learning styles. Interestingly enough, expressing emotion in the classroom was viewed as inappropriate. The idea that focusing and paying attention in school involves no emotion, is a false emerging concept. However, In order to effectively build the academic achievement and learning experiences of students, the affective domain (emotion/feeling) is very much necessary! Building knowledge involves integrating emotion and cognition.

By developing a growth mindset, we can use this mindset to recognize behaviors and pathways that genuinely bring happiness. Learning to view personality traits that make us unhappy is something that can be improved on or changed. For example, instead of complaining about things in your life, begin thinking about what in your life you're grateful about. Also, by viewing a rough patch in life or a challenge in life as an opportunity to grow instead of a personal failing.

In order to be happy, we must enjoy what we do. We must have passion for it! It must be equally entertaining skill-wise and challenging. If it's too difficult, then it causes anxiety. If it does not appeal our skill level, then it causes boredom. When the challenge is balanced with skill, flow increases; thus, causing happiness.
