The Bosnian Genocide

this is where the genocide took place, it is where the migration started. Bosnia is home to approximately 3 million people and it was where one of the worst wars after WW2 took place. The Bosnian war lasted 3 years in which 2 million people were misplaced and became refugees. The Bosnian war was one of the most brutal wars in Europe's history. The serbs often had camps which were similar to the concentration camps of WW2 but instead of killing they were used for the sexual assault and abuse of Bosnian women and children. this all caused the mass migration, if you go further into the past you can see that all of this roots from WW1 when Yugoslavia was formed.

Germany was the country to take in the most refugees, that amount being approximately 320,000. Austria also took in around 100,000 refugees, which means that they have the largest percentage of their population as Bosnian refugees (1.1%) this means that 1 in 100 people in Austria were Bosnian refugees

The Bosnians suffered many atrocities, such as genocide, rape, and more. These were the main factors for the mass migration. The perpetrator of these crimes was Serbia, Serbia was the "head country" of Yugoslavia and was the leading cause of the rise and fall of the country. The atrocities that occurred caused NATO to engage for the first time in its history and that was the tipping point of the war. NATO's involvement led to the offensive in Croatia which in turn, led to the signing of the Dayton Accords, which ended the war.

(image from the Musée de l'Holocauste Montréal)

The war would also cause many buildings to be vacated and they would turn to ruins like in the image above. Lots of buildings and infrastructure destroyed by bullets and bombs

The reason they had to go through Croatia is because it was the smallest distance to travel to somewhere safe, however, most did not settle here as croatia was also going through a war at the time.

Once again I will go back to the point that a lot of Muslim/Islam refugees would have moved to locations such as Austria, Germany or the USA, and how this would cause a lot of infrastructure to be built such as mosques and more halal options would be implemented in restaurants. Along with mosquess and the implementation of halal, the country that the refugees end up in may need more housing for the large influx of people.
