My unit plan is centered on the 11th-12th grade English levels, leaning more towards an honors curve. I drew inspiration for the unit from a text that I studied while I was in high school, but with a modern tech-centered twist.

After completing the novel Frankenstein, students will create a modern (shortened) adaptation of the novel using iMovie. Special emphasis will be placed on how the different plot strands are organized and how that organization can create effects like mystery, suspension, or surprise. In addition to the order of the plot strands, students will need to create their own version of the monster, which, in turn, lends itself to the aesthetic of the adaptation.

Additional technology incorporated within the unit will be Live Binders and Kahoot!. Live Binders will be an interactive activity that gives students a chance to explore the different interpretations of the monster throughout history, while Kahoot! will give students an opportunity to compete with each over who understands the text/vocabulary terms more.

The emphasis of the assignment is not on creating a Hollywood production, but on the content of the movie.

My standard: Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text contribute to its overall structure and meaning, as well as its aesthetic impact. (11-12.RL.5)

By creating their own modern adaptation of Frankenstein, students will have to make critical choices about the structure of their adaptation and how that structure affects the aesthetic impact of their iMovie. They will also have the ability to rearrange the different plot strands to create different effects like mystery, tension, or surprise. This gives them all the chance to become the author and make those critical choices.

This course has definitely broadened my horizon in regards to technology resources. While I had heard about iMovie (I'm a devout Apple product user), I had never really played around with it. It is definitely user-friendly and it's fun to watch your final product come to be. The other resources, Live Binders and Kahoot!, I had never heard of though.

Live Binders is great because you can compile a ton of resources altogether in one place and easily share it with other people. I really like it as an interactive activity for students, but also as a way for them to journal and keep their thoughts/resources in one place.

While I didn't do a technology evaluation form on Kahoot!, I got to watch it being used in my IMT's classroom for the general English class as a review. There was some madness involved trying to get all of the students to sign up with usernames that were their actual names (and not something inappropriate) , but their excitement for the review was clear and exciting to watch. I saw students who are typically not as engaged, buy in to their own learning and really try to get the answers right. It's also really fun and colorful, with some upbeat, quirky music so the kids were dancing and just having fun with it.

The Live Binder that the students use for the monster interpretation activity will be provided by me. Frankenstein has been adapted into film for over 100 years now, beginning in 1910 when Edison Studios produced the first, which starred Charles Ogle as the monster.

In this activity, students will have guided notes to complete by finding the answers within the Live Binder pages. The guided activity will include small sections on the history of the novel, different structures within the novel, Mary Shelley, and a larger section on the different interpretations of the monster.
