In week 3 of the 3rd grade reader's workshop, the plan at one point is to have the student identify the type of fiction that they have chosen, and to provide evidence to support their response. This requires the student to reflect on what they've read and use more than just a gut-feeling to answer the question. I really appreciate the model and think that it is a great way for students to better understand math than the way we were taught growing up. As a resource teacher, my math workshops will be very individualized. I'm not sure what my groupings will look like yet, but I will need to be able to utilize math workshops on a smaller, more specific scale. I appreciated that this article pointed out that in using this model, math lessons can be directly geared towards what students need. Also, allowing for students to work independently on new concepts or in small groups will help each student learn in a way that works well for them. It is nice to use it as a check in to look over and review the exit tickets from earlier with small groups for a max of 5 minutes.

Independent Work Time Opportunities I found were... activities that incorporate past or current topics, fact practice games, online programs, error analysis problems, task cards, problem solving.
A VERY Important thing this article mentioned....Activities are PRE-TAUGHT early in the year...this allows for students to focus on the content rather than how to "DO" the activity or play the game.
