I feel that the idea is connecting to the beach community because there’s alot of gentrification going around and alot of wealthy people trying to take over but instead of getting rid of a convinent store they got rid of a dim sum place and made it into a condominium which relates to mr.Kim but instead it didn’t happen to him.

Choi’s message is very valid towards the beach community. It’s like saying how we have a new building coming in but the area is still in the same community. There are new buildings being put up and better roads but the people here will always stick to the same community and try to share it to others. The beach community is very important to the people that have lived in the southend and that have grown up in the southend. So in beach there will always be a strong connection in the community.

The audience consists of adults and teens and this is due to the different messages in the writing/film. It can also be to an Asian audience due to the similarities of some concepts in Asian families. We can see this in how the siblings are judged on their occupation or what they are doing in the future. We can also see how the family interacts with each other. Then with other audiences that don’t have the same perspective may see the film and the message in a different way because they can’t relate it in a way with the characters.

Do you agree with the artist’s message here? Does it stand up in 2023? Does this line really say what the artist thinks it’s saying?

“Not racist… survival skill. Look. Secret survival skill. Closes his eyes and looks around.) Make eyes very small. Then, nobody know you even looking. (Reopens his eyes). Okay, brown guy, that’s steal. Brown girl, that’s no steal. Asian guy, that’s no steal. Asian girl, that’s steal.”

I think this brings up a big deal about how the older generation was and what their thoughts were. Even if it was from a different perspective in 2023 I do not agree with that statement and this is because he judged solemnly on looks and intuition. This would be a big deal in 2023 because everyone would notice that he is using racial stereotypes as well. This line really depicts what a person from the older generation would be thinking and this is from how the past used to be when racism was more common and normalized.

I see a lot of construction around here of apartments and stuff that crowd up the area and ruin the life of it. It's good to keep the place authentic and special.

How does this connect to the author's message? What is the artist saying about the real world through their art? (L3)

The author is expressing how special a good community is. To have people around that you personally know is a good feeling, especially if the community isn't a very safe one. Connections are important

How do we feel about this idea in a community like Beach? Is Choi's message still valid? (L4)

I think Beach's community is very high spirited and has a lot of heart. We aren't really known for being a wealthy neighborhood. Which relates to the quote because in order to keep this community strong, we should keep and have the places that bring the community together instead of big corporations. Those are my thoughts on what Ins Choi's messages are.

Who's the audience? Does the meaning change depending on the audience?

The main audience I believe Ins Choi is trying to direct to with Kim's Convenience are people who may come from immigrant parents, people of color, people who didn't get to grow up wealthy, or people who have a community in their neighborhood. I think people who don't fall into a similar situation might not understand the quote as deeply. It might be surface level to them and they would believe the meaning is about money, when I think the real message is about being a part of the heart of a community.
