The Funny Thing About the American Dream by Carol Margolis

As you watch the video, comment on three things:
1. Choose a strategy that the speaker uses to make his point-- this can be a humorous moment, a shift in tone, a visual, etc.
2. Connect the message of the video to a character in Behold the Dreamers-- how (even at this early stage) might we see the conflicts emerging?
3. Comment on something else that struck you-- this can be a question or a comment.

Comment on or like two other posts.

1.) A strategy used by the speaker is humor in order to engaged the listeners with this serious topic. This allows people to better understand the topic and to relate some of these stories to themselves, just like he relates them to himself.
2.) A character from Behold the Dreamers that relates to the idea of wanting to achieve the American Dream and become successful is Jende.
3.) Something that struck me about this speakers TED Talk was that he began his speech by laughing. I think that this strategy was extremely smart because it allows the audience to become engaged right from the very start of his speech.

1- He uses humor to get the peoples attention and making sure that they are drawn in. One example of this is when he started talking about argyle and people who subscribe to the New Yorker. He also jokes about the Ted Talk he is giving.
2- Jende can relate to this I feel because he had set goals he wanted to meet, and he talked about buying his family a house just like Jende had saved up for an apartment for his family.
3- Something that struck me about this video is how straight up he is. Most people when they talk about the American Dream seem to look at it somewhat positively. But he goes into it negatively and almost exposes the truth behind achieving your dream.

1.he makes jokes so people would be more engaged
2. he counted readings by 'beats', and was better able to understand them that way. he also used humor right from the beginning and people seem really interested in what he has to say.
3. he reminds me of jende because he talks about his family like it was so great, just like Jende talked about his hometown.

I agree with your first answer that he used humor in order to make his audience more engaged with him and what he wanted to say.

1. He uses humor to open his speech. This usually makes a crowd more receptive to what a speaker has to say.
2. I think his speech most relates to Nemi because she puts alot of work into living her dreams. She does alot of work trying to have 3 of the 6 things that he listed. Friends, Family, and the Dream.
3. One thing that strikes me is his consistent use of comedy throughout his speech. He uses his comedy to give the audience an enjoyable experience that they will remember, while giving an informative speech. He brings up the point about the American dream and you can only have 3 out of the 6. When I though about it, looking at stories I've heard, and read, I see this happening.

1) The speaker uses the strategy of using humor to get people to remember him and his points.
2) The message of the video related to the book, "Behold the Dreams" because both the speaker in the Ted Talk and the main character Jende are about people who were in families with nothing. They both decided they wanted to make a difference and become successful in life to help their families.
3) Something that stuck out to me was when the speaker in the video said if you want to do something good with your life, you have to give up things to achieve your goal.
