He was born in Lisbon, Portugal .  He was the son of John VI of Portugal.  His mother was named Carlotta Joaquina.  He was the fourth child of his family.

He was the first ruler of Brazil.  He He was called "The Soldier King".  He issued A Declaration of Brazilian Independence on September 7, 1822.  This was in the first three months of his rule

After his father died, He had progressed to become a titular king.  This means that he didn't have much power.  He got saved from deposition.  He failed his military.  He was induced to abdicate in 1831 by Brazilian Parliament and local uprisings.  He left Brazil to go back to Portugal, there he reigned  as Pedro IV.  He left his son, Dom Pedro II in charge
