However, its tender pictures and happy ending make this a good story to tell to those children need to not only be accepting of, but appreciative of everything that they have. Dounia, a young, Jewish girl, was living in Paris, France with her parents when one day the police arrive at her home. Her parents do their best at hiding their daughter and are then taken away to concentration camps. Dounia is lucky to find that her caring neighbors will take her in, protect her, and keep her in hiding. In the end, Dounia finds that her mother has survived as she is reunited with her as World War II ends, but her father has not. 
Dounia, who is a grandmother at the point of revealing her story, tells the events of her horrifying life to her granddaughter. She tells her granddaughter everything she went through, which is something that she has never been able to reveal to her own son.

This is an exceptional story to tell to those children who cannot seem to get along with their siblings. Raina writes this graphic novel to tell us how badly she wanted a sister, but how things were not as she expected when her sister, Amara, finally arrives. Amara is a very grumpy baby when she is born, she prefers to play by herself and does not appreciate the idea of her sister being around. As the two sisters get older, their relationship becomes no different. With a little brother who becomes a part of their hectic family, their Dad's unemployment, living in a small apartment, and a weekend car ride from San Francisco to Colorado, the two sisters must learn to get along. Raina does a great job at unfolding what her relationship with her sister really is as they are forced to be together for an entire weekend in a car with no air.

Every summer, Rose and Windy have both been returning to Awago Beach for as long as they both can remember. Rose is returning this year with her Dad and her Mom who has been depressed for a while due to a miscarriage and infertility. Windy spends her summer's in Awago Beach with her mother and her grandmother. Rose is older than Windy by a year and a few months and although their age difference has never been a problem, their friendship and loyalty towards one another is tested this summer. This graphic novel is very special to me as my best friend, Laura, and I became the best of friends when I was 5 years old and she was 7 years old. Thankfully, our age difference never, ever came in between our friendship.

El Deafo is Cece's superhero alter ego who is completely different from her. Cece develops meningitis and because of that, becomes deaf. She must learn to make new friends who won't judge her which she soon realizes will be a very difficult thing to do. Cece develops a friendship with a girl named Laura, but she soon realizes that Laura is extremely mean and possessive. She then develops a friendship with a girl named Ginny who is really sensitive to Cece's deafness and presents her to others as her "deaf friend." In Cece's mind, El Deafo would have the courage to stand up to Laura and to tell Ginny that she shouldn't walk around pointing out people's disabilities. Cece finally becomes friends with a girl named Martha who accepts her for who she truly is. As Cece and Martha do encounter bumps in the road, Cece develops courage and becomes honest with people as to how she feels and who she really is.

This would be a great book for children to read before they get older and are able to read The Diary of Anne Frank. This graphic novel tells the story of Anne Frank and her family in a simpler form than the actual book does. The book starts by introducing her parents, and then the rest of her family, and ends in the return of Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father and the only survivor of the Frank family.
