This episode touched base on the amount of domestic abuse and homicide that occurs right under our noses in Canada. The film features a number of women who had faced life-threatening events in the place where its supposed to be safest: their own home. Many women had feared coming out because they did not want to become a statistic or face the "shame" of becoming a victim.
This documentary also sheds light on how lenient the justice system is on domestic abusers. According to the Department of Justice of Canada website, those convicted of domestic violence were less likely to serve time in prison than any other offender (Gannon & Mihorean, 2015). One lady in the video spoke about how her spouse was convicted of aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm and they only got a $50 fine. 
Domestic Abuse is an epidemic and the government has to take for affirmative measures to make sure people do not commit this crime. Offenders aren't even scared because they know the sentencing will be light. Because of this leniency, women do not feel safe even after leaving the relationship. One woman left the women's shelter and went back because she was worried for the saftey of herself and others if the spouse found her. The police does not put in the proper measures for these cases. The men all have this controlling complex and they are more dangerous when they feel as if they are not in control, so during the trial periods, the police should do something about keeping them away from the victims, but they don't

Unfortunately, race and intersectionality also have something to do with this. Domestic offenders already do not get harsh sentences and the justice system is lenient with them. However, when women of colour are involved, domestic violence is even more surpressed (Crenshaw, 1991). Therefore, because of these biases, there is a zero tolerance approach to these cases and this causes most immigrant or coloured women to not call the police (Singh, 2010).

I had believed that it was the woman's fault for not calling the police and getting out of the house easily, when in reality, it definitely is not as simple as that. Often times, the women stay in the relationship for the safety of their children if they have any and it is very hard for them to call the police because once again, the zero tolerance approach and the lack of protection throughout the process leaves the women in more danger than before.
