Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in four distinct areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling, motor
fuels, and rural (off-grid) energy services.

Renewable energy resources exist over wide geographical areas, in contrast to other energy sources, which are concentrated in a limited number of countries. Rapid deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency is resulting in significant energy security, climate change mitigation, and economic benefits. In international public opinion surveys there is strong support for promoting renewable sources such as solar
power and wind power. At the national level, at least 30 nations around the world already have renewable energy contributing more than 20 percent of energy supply. National renewable energy markets are projected to continue to grow strongly in the coming decade and beyond.

While many renewable energy projects are large-scale, renewable technologies are also suited to rural and remote areas and developing countries, where energy is often crucial in human development. United Nations' Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that
renewable energy has the ability to lift the poorest nations to new levels of prosperity.

Here's what I understood from my article:

Introduction:

This article illustrates the immense potential and uses of hydropower as a source of energy. It systematically lists the various facets of this source of energy.

It starts off with an in depth analysis of how hydropower works. Then we move on to the fact that hydropower is not always applicable as an energy source in every case. So we list out requirements for usage of hydropower as a viable energy source:

1) Determining 'head': which means we basically estimate the energy output that a site of hydroelectric power will generate based on scientific principles and calculations..

2) Determining Economic Feasibility: We next logically need to determine whether this site will be economically viable to us with respect to capital and expected output.

Specifics:

Later we go into the technical specifics of the system components of a hydroelectric power plant: channels, storage and filters; turbines and waterwheels; and studying the basic mechanics of the system such as impulse and reaction.

Then we get into the legal specifics of obtaining water and land rights for this project.

Finally we find out about the process to contact the utility to legally sell the generated power at a profit.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, from all the technical knowledge gathered, we observe that this is an extremely clean form of energy with a great potential for serving as a singular source of clean energy in the future.

I would like to share about a company called Pelamis and how it is generating power from sea waves.

It is the most advanced wave energy company and has already demonstrated its Generation 1 Pelamis Wave Generators off the coast of Portugal. It is now devlopeding a 25 MW wave energy farm off the same area using its Pelamis 2 Wave Generators which are more advanced. It was the world’s first commercial scale machine to generate electricity to the grid from offshore wave energy and the first to be used commercially.Alongwith giant German utility E.On it is testing a P2 Pelamis machine over three years at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).The machine floats semi-submerged on the surface of the water and is made up of a number of cylindrical sections joined together by hinged joints. As waves pass down the length of the machine these sections flex relative to one another. The motion at each hinged joint is resisted by hydraulic cylinders which pump fluid into high pressure accumulators allowing electrical generation

The main advantages of hydropower are:

A renewable source of energy - saves scarce fuel reserves.
• Non-polluting and hence environment friendly.
• Long life - The first hydro project of India completed in 1897 is still in operation at
Darjeeling.
• Cost of generation, operation and maintenance is lower than the other sources of energy.
• Ability to start and stop quickly and instantaneous load acceptance/rejection makes it
suitable to meet peak demand and for enhancing system reliability and stability.
• Has higher efficiency (over 90%) compared to thermal (35%) and gas (around 50%).
• Cost of generation is free from inflationary effects after the initial installation.
• Storage based hydro schemes often provide benefits of irrigation, flood control, drinking
water supply, navigation, recreation, tourism, pisciculture etc.

In today's world when non-renewable resources are exhausting at a deadly pace, the only alternative is to turn to renewable resources to compensate our needs.Sea waves are one of the
best natural resources to generate power. Our earth has nearly 70% of its surface
covered with water bodies and each nation can generate as much power it
wants.Being easily available it can be easily brought to our use.Unlike
hydropower and wind power where it disturbs both the ecology and also consumes
space, sea wave power is much cleaner. The seas being large are unaffected by the
space constraint unlike solar power plants which require huge amount of space. And
it will also much more constantly supply us with power as compared to other renewable sources like solar energy which is dependent on availability of sun to generate power.Initial researchs on power generation have yielded encouraging results. If proper work and more research is
done on sea waves then it will alone solve the problem of power crisis in the
world and will provide us with a long term solution of our needs.
