things people have said against Asians. Here's some examples:
In 7th grade, some girl said "Don't they eat dogs in Japan? That's disgusting." after I mentioned Japan.
In 2nd grade, a boy who wasn't even Asian pulled his eyes back in the way that a lot of people do to be insulting towards Asians.
I looked up to this kind of famous person on a social media app for a few months, but I became so disgusted with her saying "What if it looked lie I was japanese" on a livestream ,and pulled back her eyes on a livestream with hundreds of people watching.
And I've seen several derogatory depictions of Asians in pop culture. From an episode of iCarly which depicted Japan in a very stereotypical way, to the fetishization of Asian women in tv shows and movies.
It's horrific how Asians experience horrible things like that all the time

It was clear to me, even if it wasn't clear to my white teacher or white classmates, that this boy was speaking from a place of ethnocentrism and xenophobia. First, eating bats is not a part of Chinese culture. That is a racist stereotype that perpetuates the idea that Chinese people are "dirty disgusting bat-eaters" and that stereotype gets Asian-American people murdered. Second, his question clearly showed that he saw Asian people as "other" and "foreign", it was incredibly dehumanizing to sit through him asking this insensitive question several days in a row. Lastly, it was an incredibly tone-deaf question to be asking while Chinese people were dying of the virus. Instead of being sympathetic, Americans seemed to want to play the blame game. These seemingly "harmless" comments and jokes contribute directly to xenophobia, a hatred/dislike of foreign countries and people, and in this case they specifically contribute to sinophobia, the hatred/dislike of China and Chinese people. We are all not the same. Please don't make jokes about Asian stereotypes, it hurts. Don't assume I am smart because I am Asian, I get good grades because I work hard. Also, I am just as American as every other student at WHS, and no, sorry , I don't speak Mandarin although I wish I did. There have always been more casual things people have done like pull their eyes back to "see how she sees' ', ask her to speak chinese (she's not chinese), or asking if she eats dogs and cats. I've even had teachers talk about war or injustice involving the chinese gov and they will turn to her and ask her to speak on it from personal experience, or ask us to do ancestry reports and they continually won't believe her when she tells them she's not chinese and isn't an immigrant. We have been kicked out of stores as people call her slurs, have had kids threaten her with violence and had really racist teachers but it's so normalised that people don't see her experiences as a valid problem with society. Again, I'm not part of that community but I've seen first hand how it can affect people and how wearing it is on someone's emotions.
