Effective leaders already have those traits inside of them and over time it is developed by experience. An effective leader realizes that an employee’s perception of the person in charge directly affects the work environment, so being able to communicate effectively and lead in a professional manner is very important in management.
An effective leader knows that their main job is to ensure that their unit works cohesively with a common purpose to deliver quality service to the patients and create a supportive and pleasant working environment. They must be able to negotiate, delegate, show compassion, and be supportive. Effective leaders have a hard job, but it can also be a rewarding job.

You must be able to delegate duties with confidence and be able to handle those who defy them in a professional manner. You must be able to not only set rules and standards for your nursing unit, but you must also follow them and be willing to listen with respect to the employees that have issues with them.
