A great example of suspense is in the beginning of every episode. The show normally starts with a person in a perilous situation. Sometimes the writers use dramatic irony, other times they simply delay the answer to a question. Season 3, episode 14 uses an example of dramatic irony because the audience realizes that Lanie's little brother must be in trouble but he does not. I'm going to focus my analysis on one main writer, Eric Kripke. Eric Kripke is a writer and producer best known for his work on Supernatural, Boogeyman, and Revolution. Kripke has said in interviews that he had no childhood trauma that lead him to write such dark material, the show was initially meant to show the bond between two brothers on an epic road trip. Revenge- the reason Sam and Dean travel the country hunting evil spirits is because when they were young their mother was killed by a demon and the boys and their father spend their lives trying to avenge her. 
Dreams- the youngest brother, Sam, has psychic visions that started out as dreams in them, he is able to see the future. The boys also find themselves able to dream-walk near the middle of season 3. 
Mystery and death- the brothers often find themselves solving the murders and mysterious deaths of people all around the country.
Justice- Dean and Sam fight evil and solve supernatural mysteries, they use their own form of vigilante justice to fight and punish spirits they determine are bad.
Weather- in the show some spirits are known to cause electrical storms, fog, or rain.
