At school we use learning menus with all our activities on. Each week we have a different menu that we stick in our books and tick off when we have done each activity. Some of our tasks are in red which means that they are non-negotiable. We have to do one writing, maths and reading non-negotiable every day. If we complete all of our tasks there are some additional activities we can do such as creating our own blog post. Sometimes we have challenges to complete too.

At Claremont we are given a new learning menu each week. Our learning menus have all our tasks for the whole week. They are separated into different topic areas. Unless we are in guided or supported groups (working with our teacher or TA) we get to choose which activity we do. WE tick them off when they are completed.

When I come into school I start by doing the red things on my learning menu. Then in the afternoon I can start doing painting or music.

First I do the reds because they are the most important things to do. If we start with the blacks we might not get time to do the non-negotiables.

Its where we choose what activities we want to do and which ones we do first but by the end of the day we have to have done all our non-negotiables. If there is a writing activity I choose that first because that's the table I sit on.

We have to do our non-negotiables first but then we can choose the other things we do. I choose the maths things first because maths is the best.

I go to the art table because that is my best table. On the art table we stick things, colour, cut, glitter, draw and lots of other exciting things.

Its a list of all the things that we have to learn in our week. There are speaking and listening activities, writing, maths, reading, creative, interactive whiteboard and lots of others. We go to our teacher and do a guided task in a small group.

When I have done my non-negotiables I can choose which things to do next. I choose to work on the whiteboard because you can play a game in phonics or maths.

Its a list of all the things we can do over the week. We can choose to do what we like as long as we have done our non-negotiables. There are english, maths, topic. french, science, spelling and lots of other fun things. We like doing our lessons this way because we choose what we want to do and it helps us learn better because work at our own pace and don't have to wait for everyone else. This way we get to do more things.

We work with our teacher in small groups. This way is better because we are all learning different things and the teacher can concentrate on the little things each group need to do next.

We prefer it this way!

A learning menu is a way to develop yourself as an independent learner. You have guided tasks with your teacher that where you are taught your next steps, you can then go and practice these independently and do extension challenges. The other tasks allow you to express what you can do and choose the things that you enjoy most first

Because it gives you all of your tasks and you can choose which ones to do first (once you've done you non-negotiables). I like the small groups we work in with our teacher. It is better than teaching a whole class because different groups are at different levels and need to learn different things next. I like knowing what I have done and what else I need to finish by the end of the week.

In Year 1 we have a daily menu and tick off our activities on the wall chart.

Samuel - I like to do writing on my own. I am a good writer and I like writing stories about Percy the Park Keeper.

Natty - I was want to do my maths first because I like adding.

Courtney - I like reading on my own. My favourite book is Percy the Park Keeper.

Tahsin - It where you tick off the activities you have done. You can choose which activity to do first. I like art so I choose that first.

Maiden - I like maths best so I save it til last.

Kian - I like working with my teacher so that I know I have got things right.

Cole - I like working on my own. My favourite thing is the iPads. I like the letters and sounds apps

Its a sheet in your book that has all of your tasks on, independent, guided and additional task. Every time you do a task you have to tick it off. A guided task is where you sit with teacher in a small group and look at things like writing and maths. This is where she teaches new things for us to practice independently. I like the learning menus and prefer working independently.

My favourite subject is maths and I like working with my teacher and learning new things. It is better when we work in small groups because get more time with Miss Ford than if she was teaching everyone at once.

All of our work is in one book. When the teacher has marked it we have to read the feedback she has given and do any corrections or make any improvements. She might tell us to have a go at the next challenge if we have done well

The learning menu lets us see what tasks we need to do by the end of the week and what we have completed. It has helped me to become an independent learner and be more involved in my own learning. Working in small group with my teacher allows me to be more confident and ask when I'm not sure and answer questions that I might not have had a go at before

A learning menu has categories like maths, science and art. You can pick something from the categories to do each day. You have to do certain ones every day, these are called non-negotiable. My favourite subject is writing so I choose that first. Working this way has helped me be a better learner because I can work better on my own now.

I like working in one book. It saves us time and we know where everything is. When Miss Langley has marked it she gives us feedback and we need to do the things she says to improve our work. I like the learning menu approach because we get to work in small groups with our teacher which helps me to concentrate.

Working this way has helped me to be more confident by letting me be more independent and build and build on my learning at my own pace. It is nice to work with different people each day and has helped me make some really good friends, very quickly. I am more confident now about my learning and will offer my help to others when they are stuck.

I like the learning menus because it's more challenging and fun for us and I love helping myself instead of us all doing the same thing. It was boring but now its not!
