At the start of the story, he sells his ancestral family home to the Otis family.

Stars and Stripes (the Otis twins)
The youngest Otis children are a set of twin boys who are never named in the story, instead referred to as "Stars and Stripes." They spend most of the story tormenting the ghost, and they do not seem to be afraid of him at all. On the other hand Virginia Otis
The adolescent daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otis. She comes to live at Canterville Chase along with her family, and is one of few characters to show sympathy to the ghost. She never disturbed the Ghost.

The Otis family was very happy staying in the Canterville Chase but the Ghost was not al all happy as his work was to frighten people but the Otis family was not at all scared.
The Ghost tried lot of ways to frighten them.
Firstly he made scary noises at night but Mr.Otis without being afraid of him have him a oil to put on his chains so that they are not so noisy.
Then he wanted o scare them by dividing his body parts and by acting like a very scary Ghost but he was never successful.
But Virginia was not at all like the other family members, she was sympathetic about the Ghost. 
At last the climax happens when the Ghost shares all his feelings to Virginia.
