Set up by a group of business men from Belfast, purpose was to revive an interest in harp music and collect music from the harpers and their style of playing. 11 harpers attended, 7 of which were blind and the eldest man, Denis Hempson, 97, was the only one to play using his fingernails which was an ancient tradition. Edward Bunting, aged 19, was the man employed to write down the music from the harpers and make notes of their instrumental techniques. He dedicated the rest of his life preserving Irish music.
