The narrator, who is the main character in the story, "went to spend the hunting season with some friends in Picardy" (1). He has said that he and his friends enjoy practical jokes and said that "I do not care to know people who are not" (1). His friends gave him a "princely reception," which caused him suspection of an arising joke!

The narrator is expecting a joke from his group of friends. "They must've planned a good joke." (2) That is basically what this paragraph was talking about. "Here are people who have more than their share of amusement, and apparently without reason." (2)

The narrator is becoming overly wary of a potential practical joke. "Every one seemed to me an object of suspicion, and I even looked distrustfully at the faces of the servants." (3) The suspecting factor of his personality is not letting him move forward from his wariness.

The narrator was going back and forth between conclusions of the night. He wasn't sure if they were actually going to play a prank on him, or if he was being foolish by thinking so. "However, the night was advancing; and I ended by coming to the conclusion that I was foolish." (4) This paragraph is filled with contemplating over his emotions and thoughts on the matter of the night

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

All of the characters in this story are shown to be very goofy and enjoy practical jokes. They also enjoyed making big moments for the people they were about the prank or do a joke on. With quotes like "During the dinner the mirth was excessive, exaggerated, in fact. I thought: 'Here are people who have more than their share of amusement, and apparently without reason. They must have planned some good joke. Assuredly I am to be the victim of the joke. Attention!'" As well as in the next paragraph where the narrator states "...every one laughed in an exaggerated fashion. I scented a practical joke in the air, as a dog scents game..." This shows what he and his friends are like as people. The narrator himself, is shown to be a very wary, yet fun and enjoyable person to be around. As at the end, he and his friends laughed after he ended up being the cause of his own demise (or joke in this matter), and made a fool of himself. Although despite the joke he had ended up making on himself, he still laughed it off, showing he is an overall humble human being!
