Integrity is an essential quality that every nurse must possess to be able to build trust and rapport with their patients, which ultimately promote better health outcomes. I often think back to the good old quote "Do the right thing, even when no one is watching". As a human being and a registered nurse, I strive to uphold integrity in everything that I do. Having this mindset not only reflects my character as an individual but it also reinforces the ethical concept in the nursing practice.

Advocacy

Provision 2 within the American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics for nurses aligns with my professional identity as a nurse. This provision really comes down to simple words of the commitment to the patient. As a nurse, this is one of the key roles in my duties; each encounter with my patients I make sure that their voice is heard, and their needs are met to the best of my ability. I have become more comfortable within myself to question the providers orders or treatment plans if I feel that the need is not being met at that time. Advocating for my patients brings me joy.

Respect

Respect is the golden rule that is taught at a very young age. You want to treat people how you want to be treated whether it is reflected back or not. As a professional nurse, I respect my patients decisions at all times, but I do educate them on their choices. I actively listen to my patients concerns, questions , and decisions. Respect not only involves patients but it also involves ourselves, if we do not respect ourselves and know our worth we will be in the statistics of nurse burnouts. I am working on my self- care tactics with incorporating a line between work, home, and school life.

Teamwork

Teamwork and being a team player are essentially the same thing and both strive for the same positive goal. To promote better patient outcomes it does not only involve one healthcare professional, it takes a team. Working in an outpatient clinic, the start of teamworks starts when the patient arrives and is checked in by the front desk. Each person on the floor plays a role in actively participating as a team, but when a co-worker does not do their part it really does affect the patient overall. I strive to be a team player even when we are short staffed, there is job to get done and needs to be completed no matter the obstacles that are presented.
