In the summer of 1965 the AWOC went on strike after not having there 1.25 wage increase. After 5 days the farms were bringing in scabs, so the AWOC approached Chavez and asked the NFWA to join, and so they did.The strike began around the end of the summer but by September 20 more than thirty farms were out, with several thousand workers leaving the fields. So the companies gave in and the workers got there wage increase but the strike kept on going until they were also able to unionize.Cesar Chavez pleaded with the public to not buy grapes unless they had the union stamp so a boycott began.Eventually they got Schenley and DiGiorgio, the two biggest growers in the Delano area , to also submit with even more boycotts and more demonstrations.
