Page 140
I chose the paragraph where Michael is instructed by the older boys not to raise his hand if the guards asked who wanted to see their mom. I thought this was truly significant to the story because without the guidance of the older boys, four-year-old Michael most likely would’ve raised his hand and been taken as a lab experiment. Consequently, that would result in Michael being split from his mother and grandmother and potentially death.

An important paragraph from the text is the scene where Michael had seen Hilda and thought it was mamishu. I found this passage impactful because I put myself in michaels position as being very young and realized how he had felt at that time. This scene gave the reader a little heartbreak in hopes that it would’ve been michaels mother, during this scene you also how hurt hilda is that she doesn’t have her sister here with her. At this point in time the reader can give a sense that mamishu may not return to the story.

This scene opens up mamishus perspective from the story. This positions the reader as the role of a mother and how heartbreaking it would be to have nothing left of your child. Mamishu then remembers the last thing Samuel gave her and that was a rock she wish she had held on to before she put on her concentration camp uniform. The reader feels sympathy for mamishu and the hardships she is going through while losing her husband and her son. Some readers may even empathize if they can relate to this topic in some way. Overall, this passage was impactful because the reader realizes they should be grateful for the things they have.

This scene changes the book completely. This scene is when bobeshei decides she isn’t going to America with mamishu and Michael. I chose this scene because it alters michaels fate. The grandma that took care of him throughout the war is now moving on without him which makes Michael very sad. At the same time, Michael is excited to start a new life with mamishu in America.

I chose this passage because it illustrates that there were still kindhearted spirits throughout hard times. Another prisoner just like everyone else decided instead of moping around and wasting away his life he would make the most of it and teach children education like arithmetic. Although there was lots of evil in the story, there is always some good.

I chose this scene from the story because it is the most impactful point to me as the reader. This is where everything changes as the reader got to know Samuel and Papa throughout the book and they are both now gone. The reader feels for mamishu as she just lost her husband and son which is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a mother and wife could go through. It really puts a perspective on how average everyday people take many small things for granted.

I chose this passage because it leads up to the idea that one bad thing might lead to an even better moment. In this case, michaels illness had actually ended up saving him and bobeshei from the death march happening right as Michael was in the infirmary. Everything happens for a reason and I found this scene to be really amazing due to Michael and bobesheis luck.

I chose this scene because it was very powerful to me. The moment where a mother and son reunite had almost brought a tear to the readers eye. After all the time of Michael thinking about his mother she finally returns. Both characters emotions are filled with joy and hope, especially faith from prayer. If I could put myself in michaels position and that was my mom I would be so grateful
