I chose the paragraph where Michael is instructed by the older boys not to raise his hand if the guards asked who wanted to see their mom. I thought this was truly significant to the story because without the guidance of the older boys, four-year-old Michael most likely would’ve raised his hand and been taken as a lab experiment. I found this passage impactful because I put myself in michaels position as being very young and realized how he had felt at that time. This scene gave the reader a little heartbreak in hopes that it would’ve been michaels mother, during this scene you also how hurt hilda is that she doesn’t have her sister here with her. This positions the reader as the role of a mother and how heartbreaking it would be to have nothing left of your child. Mamishu then remembers the last thing Samuel gave her and that was a rock she wish she had held on to before she put on her concentration camp uniform. The reader feels sympathy for mamishu and the hardships she is going through while losing her husband and her son. Some readers may even empathize if they can relate to this topic in some way.
