Prior to its rediscovery in 2023, there had been no confirmed sighting of the Victorian Grassland Earless Dragon since 1969. since then, Zoo Victoria has collected a small number of individuals to create an insurance population at Melbourne Zoo. The current wild population is very small and likely less than 200 individuals. The Earless Dragon is only the only species found in tiny fragments of remaining native grassland west of Melbourne.

They are listed as critically endangered under national and state laws. They are only found in victoria and depends on native temperate grasslands with tussock grasses and undistributed soils. Unfortunately, less than 1-3% of this original grasslands remains, which make its survival vary difficult.

The dragon is found only in victoria, making it an endemic species. It lives in the western basalt plains grasslands, which are west and north-west of melbourne. these grasslands are very rare today, with less than an a few percent of the original habitats remaining. The dragons survive only in small, scattered patches of native grassland where there are tussock grasses, rocks and undisturbed soil that provide shelter and food.

The main threats ro the dragoon includes habitat loss and fragmentation, mostly due to clearing for housing, farming and other developments. Overgrazing, mowing and land disturbance also destory its shelter and feeding areas. preditors such as feral cats and foxes are another danger and the species' very small population size makes it vulnerable to inbreeding, fires or droughts wiping it out.

Zoo's Victoria is working hard to save the species. they hhave established a captive breeding program at Melbourne Zoo, where the first hatchlings were produced in 2023. They are also using specifically trained detection dogs to find dragons in the wild and they are part of a recovery team that is mapping and protecting habitat. Zoo's Victoria is also raising community awearness and is encourgaging people to report sightings.

I can help by supporting Zoo'z Victoria's 'fighting extinction' program, visiting the Zoos or donating to conservation efforts. I can help by protecting and advocate for native grasslands, spread awearness about this rare lizard and report any suspected sightings to conservation groups. Even small action, such as being careful to not disturb native grassland habitats, cen halp make a difference for this critically endangered reptile.
