When Rainsford first arrived he thought the place was safe because he heard gunshots and saw a boot print. After meeting Zaroff he realizes that this place is not as great as it seemed. He had to fight to survive on the island and he could have very well met his fate on the island. He didn't and he was able to survive and fight back against Zaroff's hunting. He had to deal with the quicksand that Zaroff had warned him about. Even with the warning the island and Zaroff were still against him. He had to fight and survive against the elements of the island and Zaroff. The island was a dangerous place and Rainsford had to survive it all.
