Hozier's "Moment's Silence" is a pristine song about filthy actions. The purpose of this song was to flesh out his latest EP, Nina Cried Power, with a bluesy song about taking holy and pious things and corrupting them, as well as power dynamics. The exigence behind this song was a comment left on "Take Me to Church," a previous song of his, interpreting the lyrics as relating to oral sex, which he found interesting and somewhat humorous. Hozier replied, and I quote, "Like, if you want - if you want a metaphor about oral sex, right, here you go!" The song follows its conventions of folk rock well, with a quick tempo, a compelling guitar riff, powerful drums, and a strong blues progression.

Summary and Analysis

The song begins with an allusion to Trump, taking the 'sacred' position of President and defiling it through his actions and crude statements. It then proceeds to state that all reason is thrown out the window, with God itself looking down in "abject apathy" at its creation. The refrain mentions the "common tongue" of love, which is used to say that when all reason is gone, logic is out the window, love is a common language that can be utilized to ground yourself, in this case through a physical action. The second verse explores the power dynamics of sex, which reminds me of a particular (likely apocryphal) quote by Oscar Wilde, "Everything in the world is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power." While the common assertion is that sex is about establishing domination over your partner, especially by being on the receiving end of oral sex, Hozier instead asserts that it is a spiritual connection between people, almost like a mutual worship of each other. Indeed, he refers to the hypocrisy of 'moral leaders' who view oral sex as an act of domination as a "deformity" in order to assert that sex can be an act of spiritual expression and love rather than an act of power.

The final refrain returns to the religious aspect that is common in Hozier's music, saying,

"Like a heathen clung to the homily
Let the reason come on the common tongue of your loving me

So summon on the pearl rosary
Let the reason come on the common tongue of your loving me"

In this instance, Hozier compares sex to somebody who is impious clinging to a homily, which I interpret as Hozier subtly stating the irony in the judgement of morals (often Christian in Western culture, especially protestants) relating to sex by using religion as a basis when the judges themselves are often hypocritical at best in their interpretation and practice of their religion. The allusion to a pearl rosary is a euphemism, one that again draws parallels to religious imagery in sex.

Hozier effectively accomplishes his goals of both making a BANGER song, as well as writing a thought provoking piece of music based on oral sex. His subversion of religion by associating it with sex is a wonderful and coy way of challenging the systems of power that are prevalent in Western society, and his exploration of the power dynamics in what is typically seen as an act of domination is well done. By framing what is a 'crude' act in such elegant light, he shifts the entire connotation that surrounds it, and instead elevates it with an almost reverence. In an era of confusion and conflict, where all rationality is defenestrated, Hozier's soulful voice sings for an act of clarity.

Reflection

What did you take away from Project 2? What concepts can you apply to other classes? To other writing situations? To everyday life?

My main takeaway regarding everyday life is to remain mindful of rhetoric. Rhetoric can be as subtle as using the word "we" over "I" in certain contexts. As we find ourselves increasingly surrounded by propaganda, advertisements, and disinformation, we must remain vigilant and aware of how others could be attempting to influence us. Likewise, I learned about what subtleties can be used in my own writing to make it that much more effective. The basic rhetorical appeals can get you incredibly far, and even little changes in verbiage can create a completely different interpretation or drastically increase your effectiveness.
