Attend an induction.
Martin runs inductions for the Year 1 Production Arts for Screen students. This covers basic moulding techniques with an introduction to materials and processes. We cover life casting methods and materials as well as practical demonstrations as part of the ear/eye modelling unit. As part of the demonstrations we will be using Alginate and life casting silicone. We look at silicone moulding, plaster waste moulds and two-part waste moulds, plaster casting and casting with Cement Fondu.

Year 2 Production Arts for Screen students are taught portraiture and life modelling and as part of this process Martin teaches two-part silicone moulding and waste moulding using silicone, Jesmonite and plaster.

Book a one-to-one with Martin

Martin is based in the Casting Workshop but is often found in the Technical Arts Studios A01 and A02 or the Resin Workshop. Martin mainly assists students in moulding and casting their pieces. Depending on requirements we can cover silicone moulding, plaster waste moulds and Fibre-glass moulding and casting. Also life casting and casting in plaster, Monster clay and Chevant. We are encouraging students to use more wax in their pieces as a finished medium which can then be coloured to achieve a life-like finish. We are also using Jesmonite for the moulding and casting process as this doesn't require as stringent Health and Safety facilities compared to the casting of resin and fibre-glass.

The introduction of Jesmonite as a moulding and casting medium (Jesmonite is a hybrid material using a PVA/powder combination using glass fabric to produce a strong, long lasting mould and cast.) This is a conscious effort to use and trial environmentally friendly materials as part of the process. This awareness of materials makes the working area a safe and healthy place to be and helps to encourage the use of safer materials in the creative arts industries in the future.
