Developed by Robert House in 1971 and revised later in 1996. The Path-Goal theory was influenced by the expectancy theory of motivation. The Path-Goal Theory is used in the management world a lot in order to motivate subordinates in the workplace in order to go out and achieve goals that is in line with the structured vision the organization/manager has set. The theory starts out by saying Leaders/Managers have four distinct behaviors: Directive, Supportive, Participative, and Achievement-Oriented. Once a manager identifies their preferred method then understanding your employee and environmental contingencies would be the next step in this theory. Being aware of the skill level of the employee on top of work experience is important for managers to identify in order to make the employees life less difficult. Also understanding the team dynamics that you would be working with in order to create a clear structure for the organization to follow comes next in the path of a manager leading their group. Lastly a manager/leader can see if their course of action was deemed as a success based on things like: employee motivation, satisfaction, and leader acceptance within the workplace after the adjustment have been implemented. It can help a manager who is struggling to motive a group of individuals with varying generational gaps. If a manager can find what exactly motivate each group member (personalize) instead of having a generic reward then motivation will definitely increase. People will also except a manager who makes their subordinates feel heard which is why this theory can work very well in the world of management.

Front-Line Supervisors

A front-line supervisor in the world of business management needs to be familiar with the Path-Goal Theory because a disconnect is bound to occur without this knowledge. If a manager does not attempt to direct employees in a way that seems efficient than they will be seen as a bit stubborn, or even lazy by people below them in the work hierarchy. If a manager also fails to understand what motivates their group then they can risk lower production, and even lower amounts of motivation as a result. Being familiar with this theory will allow for a manager to identify common behaviors they possess in order to address issues that the organization is struggling with, which will increase leader/manager effectiveness once everything is fixed.
