It also states "thank you for the candy." says Hollis "horrible stuff that candy." states Steven

How does this relate to the theme?

This relates to the theme because it shows that santa claus was Steven. He was trying to be nice, Hollis loved that hard candy so he brought them to her. How does this relate to the theme?

This relates to the theme because it shows us that Steven helped Hollis by telling her to jump. He saved her life because he cared and loved her, and they were best friends. In pictures of Hollis Woods, Hollis left Steven her best friend he was sad, but when you meet back up it is the most wonderful thing in the world. For example chapter 16 page 155 it states 
“Steven Regan,” I said, my mouth trembling. “Happy birthday.”And then we were laughing, both of us, laughing instead of crying." 

How does this relate to the theme?

This relates to the theme because it shows us that when you are away from friends for a long time, and then you meet up again it is so wonderful it says they were laughing instead of crying because they were so happy they were meeting up again, and they loved each other so they were so happy and filled with joy.
