June 25, 1950 The North barrages the South with artillery, and floods the border with over 100k troops. This is very significant as it is the real start of the Korean War.

June 27, 1950 The UN authorizes its member states to mobilize their military. This is important because it is the first time the UNs military is being put to the test.

September 15, 1950 In a beach landing attack led by X Corps UN forces get behind enemy lines and liberate Seol. This is important because the majority of North Korean forces at this point have been defeated. 

July 27, 1953 An armistice is signed by a UN, Chinese, and North Korean official. The South Korean leader announced that he accepted the terms, but no signature was ever produced.

It was a fight between the ideologies of the USSR and US as much as it was a fight between the North and South Koreans. We know it was a proxy war because the two Koreas were sponsored by the US and USSR. This war still affected the Cold War because it gave both the US and the USSR an idea of proxy wars, and it affects us today because of how it split Korea in two.
