In 1979, the Federal Department of Education was established as a separate, cabinet-level government agency that would coordinate the federal government’s various initiatives and requirements. In the years since, we have had ESEA reauthorizations such as No Child Left Behind and Every Student Succeeds Act.

In addition to ESEA, the Federal government continues to administer other programs, including two large ones that tend to get less attention; child nutrition and Head Start.

Kyndall McIntosh

The Federal Department of Education determines the requirements for enrolling and graduating in public schools. It also determines the curriculum and establishes schools and colleges. They account for about 8 percent of the funds that schools receive.

Some people don't like that they have no say in what their child is learning at school and want it to be left to the state instead. Others send their children to private schools that do not receive federal funding, so they don't like paying the extra school taxes.

I have mixed feelings about this mandate because it does protect low-income students and those with disabilities, but I don't like some of the curriculum that they are forcing on teachers due to changes in the world. I think it should be up to the States/local communities to decide if they want to teacher certain topics.

If I could change one aspect of this mandate, it would be for the states to be in charge of the curriculum aspect because children would be learning things that was approved in a more local setting. I feel like it is more likely to be tailored to that specific state's population/beliefs rather than the whole United States.

Abbey Hall

#1: The Federal Department of Education establishes schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for enrollment and graduation. These can impact the minimum required grades for students to pass classes and also for them to pass and be able to graduate. They also impact the amount of schools in districts which can affect the feeder system. Colleges can be affected if their enrollment rates go down or up and that usually determines their state funding.

#2: There have been people who think it's unfair how the department is in charge of funding schools and colleges, they might give more money to one school but others might think it needs to go another school that is struggling. People also might not like the guidelines set for students when passing classes and graduating as well as what their child is learning in school

#3: I think there needs to be a Federal Department of Education because they help regulate the education system but at the same time, it isn't super fair to schools that need funding and are never getting it. Funding is important because it supports students and their learning. And with more funding, schools test scores could be higher etc because they have the resources to support and help their students.

#4: I think the thing I would change is that there should be some community voices in making decisions about curriculum and requirements for passing classes and graduating. Having those community/smaller voices can help raise awareness of what the people are saying and what the department is not hearing.

Brielle Kueper

This mandate impacts schools in quite a few ways. The Federal Department of Education is who is the one who makes the rules for those public schools you may be attending or have attended. They are the ones who make it required that you do well in school and your classes in order to receive your diploma. I do think that this definitely has an impact on our school system but I feel that it is necessary for the public schools to have this.

This mandate is definitely one of those things where it leaves some people happy and some people very unhappy. I think there are a lot of these times within the education system. There will always be someone who is unhappy and some people who might not agree with what their child’s school system says.

I do think I agree with this mandate. Like I said in my first answer I do think it is necessary to have this mandate as it kind of keeps the school system in line and I think it would be a little messy if this mandate wasn’t a thing. I definitely think there could be some small things about the mandate that could be changed but I don’t think at all that it should be completely gotten rid of.

If there was one thing that I would change about the mandate it would be that more people maybe get a say in the mandate. I don’t think everyone needs a say because then it would get out of control but I do think that it wouldn’t hurt to have a few other voices or opinions from others over the mandate and what they may think or think would be best for the mandate/school systems.

Hannah Johnson

1.) The Federal Department of Education determines almost everything for schools and colleges. From enrolling to minimum requirements for grades to graduating. They are in charge of a lot.

2.) This is kind of a tricky one. I think the biggest criticism is that we have no say whatsoever. If they make up a new rule or law, we have to follow it we don't really have a choice.

3.) Yes and no I think it's good that we have this set-in place but also, I think there should be something were everyone in the education department could have a say so in things.

4.) What I would change is that we should have it set up were everyone in the education department could have a say so in things.

Aleanna Padron

1#The mandate provides essential funding and resources, ensuring that schools can offer specialized services and inclusive education for students with disabilities. It promotes equality and access to education, benefiting the community as a whole.

2#Challenges include insufficient funding, which can strain school resources, and the bureaucracy involved in compliance. Critics also argue that the one-size-fits-all approach may not address unique local needs.

3#Yes, I agree with the mandate because it ensures that all students, including those with disabilities, have the right to a quality education. It fosters inclusivity and equal opportunity, essential values in education.

4# I would increase federal funding to ensure that all schools have adequate resources to implement the mandate effectively. This would help address the funding gap and support better educational outcomes for all students.
