For three months now, they have been living in tents but of course they couldn't fit in one tent so they were all scattered.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sandra, her aunt, mom, and Deborah (Sandra's sister) hid under the mattresses for at least half an hour until they heard voices coming their way saying <mark>"We've come to rescue you" (pg. 7)</mark> Sandra's mom came out asking if it was true and they followed the men to "safety". Suddenly, one of the men said to shoot them and they shot Sandra's mother. Sandra immediately ran away going in a tent for her safety leaving her mom.</div>]]></description>

She saw men stealing things from their suitcases, not noticing Sandra at all. When the men took off, Sandra came out and looked for her mom but couldn't find her anywhere. Then, a man grabbed Sandra and she said forgive me not knowing why then she said Goodbye to life, thinking it was over. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Sandra's community, when girls became teenagers, they were often married. Sometimes, tribes would actually steal a girl to marry to their son, this once was attempted to her sister, Princesse. This was a part of an "unfortunate" culture. Young men would kidnap a girl, rape her, and then marry her. The rape part was so the girl would be too embarrassed to go home or so the girls' family won't ask for her back.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Where Sandra studied, they would get punished if you were tardy or got an answer to a question wrong. If you were late, you would be told to kneel down and you would get hit with a stick or a ruler. Other times, if you were caught late in front of the gate, would have to walk to class on their knees or work in the garden pulling out weeds. If you didn't know an answer in class, you could get a beating like 10 wacks.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sandra and her family moved to Burundi when her parents found out that their tribe was under threat. They stayed with a family friend named Joyeuse and it wasn't just them at the house, there were a lot of other kids where Sandra made a friend named Shiva. Shiva was a couple years older than Sandra so at school, Sandra still didn't know anybody. Sandra and her family ended up staying there for about a year.          <description><![CDATA[<div>One memory from Sandra's childhood was when her mom found out that Sandra's uncle, Rumenge, had passed away. Sandra's mom locked herself in her room and would not come out and Sandra didn't understand what was going on at that time until Princesse explained it to her. Sandra's mom would stare at the only photo she had with Rumenge and sit with all his clothes around her for days. Before Rumenge died, he gave Sandra's mom $100 which was big at that time.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Aside from war, rainy seasons were also a problem.<mark> "The river would ride up and flood the streets, and we would have to leave home in a hurry."</mark> Sandra said on page 54.<br>The floods always happened in the middle of the night and very often. Sandra and her family would just hear loud roars outside and everytime they  do, they would do their routine and lock up the house and climb to the tom of the front gate for safety.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Sandra's neighborhood, kids would perform an elaborate dance, which was Sandra's favorite. <mark>"The boys made the drums from empty tin cans of Nido. a powdered milk drink made by Nestle." (pg.57).</mark> They would use different sizes cans to create different sounds. Also, at the very end of the performance, they would host an after party where they served rice, beans, fanta, and coke.</div>]]></description>

Her teachers were even warning her and her parents that trouble was coming Then, one morning, Sandra's dad just tells her to pack because they were leaving again and this wasn't something new to Sandra so she just packed. They got in a yellow mini van with a stranger behind the wheel and drove about an hour until there was a checkpoint, or an ambush rather.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><mark>"A grown man marched up to the van, looking like he wanted to kill us" (pg. 64).</mark> The man punched Deborah on the face out of nowhere leaving everyone in shock. There was no way out for Sandra and her family, so they just sat there waiting to die until another man told them to leave or they are going to die. That stranger saved their lives that day and Sandra will never forget him. They ended up staying at a field in Burundi that night after an hour of driving.</div>]]></description>

There were hundreds of other people, no tents or anything, not even food. <mark>"The field stretched along the highway that ran from Burundi to Congo, and cars whizzed by us as we lay in the dirt" (pg. 68)</mark>. All they had was the hard ground and the blankets that people handed out which were to itchy. The next morning, UNHCR officials started building tents for them and that became their new home.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The killers who attacked the camp were rebels from Burundi who did not want refugees there. That night, was the most terrifying night for Sandra.<mark> "I stood there, expecting to die, but it felt like an eternity"(pg.74).</mark> Her mom and sister had been gunned down and now has a gun pointed at her head. Sandra wondered why the man hadn't shot her yet and they just stood there for minutes. Then somehow, Sandra got kicked on the ground and the man chased after someone else. That's how Sandra survived that night and also by running away without knowing where to go.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Running away got Sandra <mark>"to the fields of a nearby farm" (pg.75).</mark> There she met a woman that was behind a tree. The woman asked Sandra where her parents were and Sandra answered <mark>"I think my mom is dead"(pg.75).</mark> They both went through a field where they saw survivors including Sandra's uncle Ezekiel. Ezekiel claims that he saw Sandra's mom so they went to go search for her tapping everyone on the shoulder. Then there, Sandra's mom was standing by herself along wrapped in a sheet. Sandra ran up to her mother and gave her the biggest hig.</div>]]></description>
