I had the opportunity to leave education several years back.  I declined.  Although I would have walked into an upper level position with a higher salary, it would not have fed my soul.  In my 22 year career as an educator I have continued to learn and expand my desires.  Growing from a teacher, to an instructional coach, to an assistant principal then principal, my desire to move into a district level position grows.  I will continue to expand the impact I have on students’ academic and social success.

As a probationary teacher I want you to be coachable.  Will you accept and receive feedback to make improvements in your practices?  Can others teach you and you be open enough to learn from others?  Attendance is critical.  

Probationary teacher interviews are insightful as you don’t necessarily have a true experience of your classroom.  Can you experience your passion for teaching?  Building appropriate teacher/student relationships is crucial.  Can you describe what your classroom looks like/sounds like when an administrator walks into observe?

Impacting young people is always rewarding.  As a teacher you do not always see your influence first hand; however, years later they will amaze you with their accomplishments.

My 2nd year as a building principal I interviewed a teaching candidate who was a middle school student of mine.  What an honor for me to see him grow up and have a love for middle schoolers when he wasn’t an ideal student during his adolescent years.

Then I would strongly suggest a new teacher continue higher level education as quickly as possible to move across the pay scale early in their career.
