TASK 1

1. Hello, my name is Koo Chee Yan. Call me Chee Yan or Riley, whichever that is easier to remember. I am 21 years old and I live in Petaling Jaya. I was a former DMCN student in IICS from 2020 to 2022. What I expect form this English class would be that I might be able to improve my own English competency level more, as someone who has taken English for Academic Purposes in DMCN I think this course will be a great way to improve my skills even more.

2. My English Competency level I would say is Level 2 or A2. Although I mainly communicate in English for speech and text, I still lack in speaking the language in a long timing as I get confused at my own words and suddenly starts mumbling and stuttering.

3. See attached

4. My number is 017-5126495

TASK 2

1. In my opinion, I agree that we can fully trust the media. I think that the media is actually a good way to provide people all of their necessary needs of news or information. Although there will be times that misinformation or fake news will be spread around media, but I believe that there will be someone that will send out real and trustable news as long as the people who consume the media is well educated enough to identify what is true or false.

2.

Hello, my name is Hanim and I'm 20 years old this year. I'm a bit of a nomad, moving from place to place. Sometimes I'm from Sunway Mentari, sometimes I'm from Emira in Shah Alam. Some of my favourite activities are to sing, read, play video games and spend time with the people I love. I'm a bit outgoing at times, but it fluctuates. Sometimes I'm super quiet and shy. Other times I'm loud and I'll try to be funny. However, I'm always welcoming to those who approach me, I'm just a bit hesitant to approach others. I'm a big fan of Valorant, Harry Potter, A24 and 5 Seconds of Summer, so if you're interested in any of those things, rest assured, we will definitely hit it off. I like to talk a lot about things I know, I used to be in my high school debate club and I've competed for four years consecutively, won twice. That being said, I do talk. A lot. Very passionately. It may seem like I'm arguing with you but trust me, it's all out of love. What I expect in this class is to be able to approach English from different perspectives as this class itself is English in Mass Communication specifically. I'm interested to see what angles we'll tackle when looking into English. My level of competency in English would be a 5 for both reading and listening. I think my speaking is a high 4, but maybe my writing is a bit lower, like a 3.

My number is 0176522529.

TASK 2:

I don't think we can fully trust the media for details of certain events where details matter, such as news articles about crimes. The media turns to exaggeration in order to grasp the attention of people. That's probably because people on these social media platforms tend to scroll mindlessly, so only a really captivating headline would stop us from our scrolling to actually read the article. Furthermore, usually, it's only a picture on Instagram with a headline but there's a link in the caption to get the full story. In order to get clicks, not only does the picture with the main headline have to be captivating enough, but the small amount of details in the caption need to be enticing enough to get people to actually click on the link. A prime example of this is an Instagram account that goes by "buzzfeednews", who post 10-15 times a day and need engagement on their website so they go for these really flashy, over-the-top titles and then the picture itself is a bit misleading in context, then the caption is even more taken out of context so it leaves people wanting to know more. That's why I don't fully trust the media, because sometimes a story isn't all that dramatic or bombastic, but that's what they make it out to be. However, in some cases, details don't really matter. Like if they were reporting about a celebrity breakup or feud. In other cases where it does matter, like if they were to be reporting about social issues or events, some things may be exaggerated or left out in order to push the narrative that they want the readers to see. It's hard to get a raw, honest and neutral approach about news, especially on media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. I think the only news we can trust on media platforms is the official newspapers' websites or apps, where you get everything from the paper in an online form.

Hi everyone! I'm 19, a pisces and my favourite holiday is Christmas. I come from Cheras and my hobbies include reading, dancing and shopping. I like kpop, anime, Harry Potter, and heavily tragical romance novels. I HONESTLY have no idea what else to say about myself, but I love making new friends so don't be hesitant to approach me, I swear i'm not scary ;)
My competency in English is a strong 4 at speaking, 5 at reading and 3 for writing. I definitely need to improve more on my writing skills so I don't fail ;-;
01160647052 - nat
------
TASK 2
Personally, the media shouldn't be trusted blind-heartedly nor depended on too much. Many victims have fallen into traps such as being scammed or hacked, which can result in a large amount of money being stolen or identity theft. Moreover, there are information online that websites or bloggers post which are heavily opiniated. Information such as a review of a makeup product or a movie depends on person to person, so it is not suggestive to take all these opinions into heart until witnessed. There are also individuals online that like to announce untrue news online to cause panic to the community. For example, a death of a celebrity. Social media platforms such as Instagram or Twitter, showcases unrealistic and harmful expectations to the general public that alter societal views on people. This could include racism, body image, body size, culture and so on. I cannot stress on how harmful it can be towards people of a younger age as they may think that they may not look normal according to society's views. To close, the media poses many benefits for our convenience ,however it does not change the dangers that follow.

TASK 1:
1. I'm 20, extremely charming and everyone loves me. I mean can you blame them?? I LOVE ME. Anyways, I love Netflix, well technically it's the only thing that requires no brain. Well, I would say I enjoy watching movies. So, if you happen to watch A LOT of Netflix, I'm pretty sure we can get along well. Even if you don't its fine ig :) I'm pretty loud too so if you're okay with that then yeah we can be friends. Honestly, I just am pretty excited to learn, expand my vocabulary ;) This is my first class for degree and so far pretty amazing, very excited for this journey.

2. I wouldn't say I'm bad but when it comes to noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, I I don't know the difference. No matter how much I read, study or memorize, I just cannot for the life of me remember what they mean. So, quite frankly, I give up :')

3. 017-9759832 (shav)

TASK 2:
1. Strongly disagree. I, myself, have seen too much fake news. Embarrassing to admit but I even believed it at some point because of how real it seemed. These things are often to attract public attention, gain followers and are used as a tactic to increase repost, number of likes, and shares. The more the number of shares, likes, comments, the more the money of course. Content creators or even just normal users are often posting or sharing stuff that is just simply not true therefore it is extremely important to make sure the source of the news is legitimate before we as a user decide to share it on our platforms. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook are all involved in spreading of rumors not only regarding celebrities which are often the hot topics on the Internet but also world news, current ongoing issues regarding social injustice protests, government laws, etc. For example, the corona virus (Covid-19) where people claimed it was after a person from Wuhan, China consumed a bat that the virus was contacted. The public had a lot of other theories regarding this global pandemic as well. All in all, it is important to validate your story and make sure the source is right before posting it anywhere.

I have a poor vocabulary and always don’t have the patience to read a long paragraph.

4. 016-6667213

Task 2: I don't agree that we can fully trust the media. This is because too many people want to share their opinion. They might only share what they think is correct and prefer, which can cause misunderstanding. And the public is more likely to believe the most common information that might not be correct. For example, when there is news about an idol, people can comment on the post and spread the information on social media. However, they might be too aggressive and confuse others. Furthermore, there might have scammers on the Internet. They might sell something on the Internet at a super low price by attaching an eye-catching product package. The public will be attracted and make the decision to buy with them very quickly without checking their credibility. For example, a promotion on Facebook might be inaccurate as they might not update the price or just want to scam others.

As the advance of Internet world and social media, everyone like us can post opinion and information on any platforms. Everyone is allowed to write, to share what they want. In every different opinion and perspectives, people can write or share their own opinion as this may lead the reader to understand or receive wrong information and misunderstand the actual situation or news. For example, Facebook, everyone that has an account in it or sign up an account in Facebook, is allow to anything. People can post situations happened in our surrounding such as road accident, snap a photo, upload. Or people arguing in public area, some people wanted to share and just record the situation without permission, and post. The people that post it might write something different from what the actual situation is and lead to misunderstanding and argument.

Next, the accuracy of the information being reported might be giving the false information that you receive from the media too. One example of fake news in Malaysia is a viral WhatsApp message that claimed that the government would be implementing a nationwide lockdown for a few months. There is no denying that it can be convenient for people, but it also has its downsides. Although the information it gives has a certain degree of credibility, it cannot be fully trusted. The media is spread through information and material that people post online and the people who post it are not necessarily the ones involved. Therefore, the credibility of the media is not 100%. Besides, it can also lead to facts being covered up through if the direction of public opinion enough strong. So, I disagree with this. For example, in Facebook they will spread fake news to make netizens blindly believe and share it.As a result, everyone believed that the error message.Sometimes the media will republish news from a few years ago, causing people to be misled into thinking that this happened this year. Three years ago, a group of covid patients died of illness, but this was shared by everyone a few years later. It leads everyone to think that there are still people who died unfortunately due to covid this year. Finally, I think it is very important to confirm whether the news is true or false before sharing.

I am Yong Yee, 19 years old. I graduated from Hin Hua High School I hope I can make some new friends in this class because I don't know anyone in my class right now 😢 And then I also hope that I can do well in all my exams, presentations and assignments. My English is not very good, because i am lack of vocabulary , and there are too many tenses in English, which is hard for me 😩 My phone number is 0162969672.

I do not fully trust the media. Because humans can often repost news without knowing whether it is true or false and it will cause some unnecessary worry to the people. For example, i have seen before the news about actor divorce or have illegitimate child. Then, the irrational fans started to comment something unreal and rude under the artist post and every social media. Some netizens also began to bully online, and there were many artists who chose to quit the entertainment industry or even end their own lives because they could not stand the bullying.
