The Soviet Union kept hold of many Soviet republics. In 1991 the Soviet republics, such as Estonia and Latvia, declared independence and the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Russia was formed cooling the tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. But today still, Russia lives under a strict government and the tension is still there

October 1962, The Cuban Missile Crisis

In October 1962, the Soviet Union placed nuclear weapons, called missiles in Cuba. Cuba was not part of the United States but it was very close to Florida, a southern state in the U.S. This was considered a threat to the United States and if the weapons were used the could have destroyed the world. The reason the Soviet Union did this was because the United States placed missiles in Turkey, a neighboring country to the Soviet Union. Eventually the leaders of the countries made an agreement to remove the weapons from the neighboring nations.

1965, India and Pakistan War

In 1965, a war broke out between India and Pakistan. Both nations wanted to take over the neighboring country Kashmir. This war did not majorly involve the U.S. or the Soviet Union, but the nations had nuclear warheads that were very dangerous.

1948, The Berlin Airlift

After the Soviet placed the wall between eastern and western Europe, families were split up and western Europe was left with little food and water. The U.S. took action and flew planes over the western Europe, dropping first aid kits, food, clothing, water bottles, and other essential needs.

1948, The Berlin Blockade

In 1948, eastern Europe had been ruled the Soviet leaders under communism. Eastern Europe was referred to as Berlin. The Soviet leaders set up a wall separating Berlin and people in Western Europe who were not communists. Families were split apart and it was very difficult to escape.

After W.W.II Europe was left in ruins. The U.S. provided welfare to Europe by providing them with billions of dollars. This helped the European nations recover from the war, and get back on their feet.
