A Community Zero-Waste Workshop: This is a group posting activity. Each group will post only one response with the outcomes described below. Feel free to read the other groups' responses, but you are not obligated to respond.

Let's go back to Solange and Cheminvert and see if we can come up with some learning outcomes for a 90 minute workshop on a topic that seems to be on the minds of many these days: How do we recycle more responsibly? Or better yet, reduce our consumption to start with? Imagine Solange is going to head up this workshop for interested citizens. We'll assume kids aren't involved this time. (Remember that considering your learners' characteristics is an important part of your planning!)

Start your group discussion by proposing a couple of possible learning outcomes for this workshop. Do your best to consider resources you'd need and time constraints. With your group mates, compare, contrast and discuss your objectives. Are they measurable? Should they be? Are you building knowledge? Motivating people to change their behaviours? Providing resources? All of the above?

You don't need to agree on a final set of outcomes for this activity, but hopefully you'll get at some of the nuances and complications that arise when you start picking apart the language of outcomes, and considering what's achievable. Our biggest problem with setting outcomes is that we usually want to do more than we can actually achieve, so it is important to select objectives carefully and realistically. by Sharmaine Itwaru

Our group chose to focus our workshop on how we can reduce waste and recycle more responsibly within the kitchen. This workshop will be offered in a large metropolitan city where most of the population lives in high rises or small spaces. Throughout this workshop the participants will take part in obtaining knowledge through the following four objectives:

1. Participants will learn how to reduce food waste by creatively using all elements of food products.

2. Participants will learn how to properly compost and identify where it can be used in order to fertilize home gardens.
3. Participants will gain the knowledge needed to grow a sustainable potted garden.
4. Participants will learn to identify reusable household products which can replace single-use products.

During this workshop, learners will gain knowledge by completing the rules listed below. Knowing and applying these criteria will allow the learners to recycle and compost more effectively.
Recycle: Recycling refers to the process of transforming waste into reusable material.
recyclable papers include cardboard, paperboard, newspaper, white paper and mixed recycle papers.
Plastic container labeled with no1 or no2.
Glass container: beer, wine and other beverage glass containers and as well as glass jars.
Workshop Overview and Objectives

(Ali McKee)
Our group has chosen a 90-minute workshop with a focus on the benefits of composting to reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills. Our workshop will center around building knowledge, providing resources, and ultimately motivating people to change their behaviours around composting and waste. We have included some measurable objectives as well as some that are not measurable. We have found one of the more difficult aspects of planning learning objectives, especially for a short workshop, is finding ways for participants to demonstrate the learned information/skill.

We have decided to direct some of our workshop funding toward purchasing compost bags and tupperware containers the participants can take home with them, to remove financial barriers and implement a more immediate change in behaviour. The participants will also take home a quick reference guide about what materials can go into the compost, and what must remain in the garbage. I have included some examples of our learning objectives below:

“By the end of this workshop, participants will have increased knowledge and confidence about what materials can and should be composted and will be able to apply this learning immediately in daily life.”

“By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to identify 2 or more non-food household materials that can be composted.”

“By the end of this workshop, participants will have the knowledge to apply sustainable food storage practices to daily life, avoiding single-use plastic bags and opting for reusable products and containers.”

“By the end of this workshop, students will have knowledge of the possible uses and applications of compost materials”
