We have a membership program with 2 levels, family $40 or single $25. Since admission is free, many of our members are mission driven and often pay at levels higher than that. My boss, who does not have a nature center or nonprofit background insists that for tax purposes we must separate out the membership amount and call whatever is over that amount a donation. So if we get a $100 family membership, in our accounting we enter it as a $40 membership and a $60 donation, instead of a $100 membership. This makes it a challenge to get an accurate picture on our annual membership income and the value the program brings to the nature center.
