One-Syllable Adjectives: 

For most one-syllable adjectives, add -er to the end of the adjective.  tall → taller .

Spelling change:

Consonant + vowel + consonant - double the last consonant + -er.  hot → hotter


Two-Syllable Adjectives Ending in -y: 

Change the -y to -i and add -er.  happy → happier


Two or More Syllable Adjectives: 

Use more or less before the adjective instead of adding -er.  beautiful → more beautiful 

Irregular Comparatives:

Some adjectives have irregular forms that do not follow the rules.

good → better 

bad → worse 

far→ further/ farther
