Soft piano during introduction creates an emotional atmosphere/tone as if attending a funeral. Electric guitar and rock band instruments (drums, bass) is a nod to the musician’s style. The use of backing singers in a church chorus style creates a sense of religion (hence the funeral setting) the electric guitar adds a strong dramatic sense of emotion to the song as if it’s representing Scaramouche’s feelings bursting through her.

Emotional journey: fellow rockstar(good friend) has passed away from alcohol poisoning which she has experienced before. But this time everything really hits her in an emotional way because she feels the injustice that her friend has died so young.

Character transformation- the character starts the song sullen and upset wondering how to keep on pushing through without the help of their friend, but as the song goes on they become angry with a sense of injustice that her talented friend has died so young. This represents the stages of grief and we see the character transition through these stages in the song

Physical/mental tensions through text- “do you want us to cry?” “Another tricky situation, I get to drowning in the blues”- suggest this isn’t the first for the musician has had to experience this. She is drowning in the blues meaning she is heavily impacted by this and feels she may spiral.

Dynamics- upset, softer tone to heavy, gritty and angry belts.

Imagination/ active recall- to help me connect to this song and character my active recall will be very close to the story itself. All my favourite musicians are dead and most have died young and in unfortunate ways. Such as, Freddie Mercury, Jeff Buckley, Elvis, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison. I’m going to be singing this song to them. Thinking of how most of them were treated unjustly by those in their lives or the illnesses they contracted.
