My name is Shelly Moore, and I am in the professional counseling program at Angelo State University. My ultimate goal with this degree is to become an LPC here in Texas and use that to work with youth in a local organization or possibly run one myself one day. My personal goal is to complete my master's within the next year and a half so i can start my career as a helping professional before turning 30.

This particular course is a great opportunity to recognize and understand the impacts that trauma has on a person's mental health and learn to prepare for crisis intervention.

Introductions/Assessing Prior Knowledge

In this assignment, I was given the opportunity to introduce myself to the class and also a chance to "meet" them and learn about their professional goals as well. We were given links to quizzes that helped us measure our current knowledge about mental health awareness, stigma, statistics, etc. These quizzes are eye-opening by helping a student establish a basis for what we know and what we need to prepare ourselves to learn and better understand.

Reference Guide for Mental Health Disorders

In this section of the course we worked through a process of identifying sources that work as useful tools to refer back to and recall information on specific mental health disorders. During this section we learned about a variety of mental health disorders and also the different types, such as, depressive disorders: bipolar, post-partum, seasonal, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. I really enjoyed this assignment because I was able to explore each one and essentially do a crash course to learn the definitions, causes, and interventions for each mental illness. All while collecting reputable sources to further attain knowledge on the subjects.

Developmental Discussion on Trauma- Cyntoia Brown

This assignment was very interactive and educational. Here we are given an opportunity to dissect a documentary of our choosing. The goal is to identify the trauma in the documentary and learn, practice, and apply helping professional strategies to the situation we see. I chose the Cyntoia Brown story, and it was fascinating.

I learned so much about generation trauma and its impact on a child not even raised by their biological family that experienced so much trauma to begin with. I also was able to learn from other classmates that explained their professional perspectives on different documentaries. It was most interesting to me to recognize the different thinking processes for myself in comparison to classmates that chose the same documentary as me. We shared similar perspectives but also respectively acknowledged our difference of opinions. Great opportunity to brainstorm with "colleagues."

Crisis Prevention and Threat Assessment Presentation- Dating Violence

This is a group presentation done congruently with peers to provide information and strategies in the event of a dating violence crisis. In this presentation you'll find resources to learning more on the subject of dating violence and teen dating violence. There are fact sheets offering insight and risk factors for identifying early signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship. Find the Self-Made Assessment to gather information from the individual and gain better understanding of their situation. There are suggestions provided for what local agencies should be involved and how their role proves to be a resource in these circumstances.

ABC Model/ Case Study- Steven

ABC Model in action. This is a first attempt at utilizing the ABC Model as a tool to approach 14-year-old, Steven, as he battles with overwhelming anger and aggression. Here we are given an opportunity to study the ABC Model and apply it to a case to the best of our ability, with given resources and tips.

Psychological First Aid- Certificate

The Psychological First Aid course was very informative and educational. This is incredibly useful information to have and use as an aspiring counselor. I expect to store this knowledge and revert back to the steps in my career. I learned the importance of immediate psychological care in preventing further damage, rather than a sole focus on long-term care.
