How does DNA act at a code - how does it make the amino acids get together? how does it tell the cell what needs to be done?

DNA does not leave the nucleus. It is protected in the nucleus from damage. It is also too large.

We copy small sections of DNA (a gene) to send out into the cell cytoplasm.
This messenger then instructs the cell in which order to place the amino acids.

We copy the DNA on to single stranded RNA. We call the messenger RNA mRNA.

The mRNA moves to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm which helps the amino acids to join together in the correct order.

The order of the bases in the mRNA strand determine what amino acids are needed and in which order.

The finished protein then has a specific role in the cells, like receptors, enzymes, antibodies, or transport proteins like haemoglobin.

Not all genes are copied and expressed in each cell. It depends on the role of the cell as to which genes are needed.

We call this process protein synthesis

There are cells that we do not want to contain the exact genetic material as the original cell - gametes. Gametes contain half the number (haploid) of chromosomes as a normal body cell (diploid)

When making gametes a similar process takes place, but the chromosomes are separated twice. the cells we end up with are genetically different to the original cell.

We also have an extra stage when the chromosomes can swap some of their genes with each other. This means we mix up the combination of genes from both parent. This means the cells we get at the end of meiosis are genetically different to each other as well.

Why is this important? This means each human that is born is unique and has a different combinations of alleles and characteristic. This give greater variation in the population. We will look at this in more detail next topic.

Bacteria reproduce by creating an identical copy of their DNA and splitting in 2. This means each daughter cell is identical to each other, and the original cell.

Plants can also reproduce from one parent, creating identical offspring. It is called Asexual reproduction.

Advantages

You can create a whole new population from a single cell relatively quickly

Don't need to find second parent / sex cell (can be difficult if not a very motile organism)

If a plant is in a very isolated place, it is able to reproduce on its own

If a farmer has a perfect breed of crop, it can be easily copied and grown increasing yield or profit.

Disadvantages

Lack of variation in the population, each member is a clone

Lack of genetic diversity means the population are vulnerable to disease, and changes in the conditions or environment
