What and how can sound do to affect audience's mood towards a film?

Basic Idea

The film would be planned and filmed as a romance but in post-production it will be edited to seem like a horror. This may require a few extra shots for dramatic effect and most importantly a good use of sounds. The story would centre around a young couple (17-18) who are still new to dating so there will be some nervous feeling from the both of them. After a dinner date, the girl asks him if he would like to come round her house and she'll cook. He agrees and it cuts to the day he agreed to come round. It's coming up close to the time he is expected to arrive and his best mate is giving him a lift there and calming his nerves a little. He arrives on time as the friend says goodbye and drives away. The man nervously walks up the pathway and knocks on the door (Where built up tension can be made by emphasizing the footsteps and using slowly rising music and loud when she opens the door). They greet each other and she comments that he seems a little nervous as kind of a joke but it's very real for him. He sits down at the table why she returns to the kitchen saying that she was running a little bit behind and being quite apologetic. This is where the character is isolated and on his own and noises like cutting of vegetables may be exaggerated to makes the characters nerves into fear of something that isn’t supposed to be scary. This will be portrayed as his imagination so the audience can see what he is thinking to understand why he is so nervous. Despite the scary thought he has, the date will go well and hopefully the audience will feel good for the character since he overcame his fears.

It was originally going to be all the time horror without dialogue, meaning the music and sounds would be on constantly. But I felt this would take away from the characters and the story, and whilst the focus is on the sound I don't want it to take over the entire production because I feel there would be no connection to the characters so the audience may loose interest. Also, having both a romantic tone and a horror tine gives me a chance to experiment with both genres seeing how different it affects the audience.

Target audience

Since I chose the age range to be 17-18 this means it will most likely appeal to people around that age range (15-21). Also it will make casting easier since I can ask people from college, potentially drama students.
