Students with disabilities were finally granted equal rights in schools. Student diversity had a positive impact on all students. All students were able to learn in schools.

IDEA was revised in 1990, 1992, 1997, and 2004. IDEA is a Federal Law that ensures students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment in public schools. Student who receive special education services must have an individualized education program (IEP) that educators must follow. IDEA also identifies the minimum requirements each state must meet to receive federal special education funding. State laws may go above the minimum federal requirements, but never below the federal requirements (The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, n.d.).
As a student, I remember having a diverse population in my classes. This benefited all the students on campus. We were provided the opportunity to learn from our peers and understand acceptance of individuals differences. As a special education teacher of 21 years, this law has greatly impacted my students. IDEA has allowed my students to learn with their peers, be accepted on campus, and provide equal and individualized education to students with special needs. I am an advocate for my students and try to teach my students to advocate for themselves. I will continue to follow current laws, paying close attention to state laws regarding students who receive special education services. I will need to ensure that I know the most current information in order to serve students to the best of my ability.
