Even if they're not her friends. In Chapter 3 she did not tell on the children for going to the store at lunch time. Even tho she was with them she could of told on them the next day out of anger for them not becoming her friend. Then in chapter 5 when Mabel used swear words at her and punching her in the eyes she kept quite. Even when her parents kept asking her also taking her to the police station she still didn't tattle. I think the deeper meaning behind this is loyalty. As I went back and read I thought about Senora's perspective. When she received a letter from her little girl Nonnie it made her very sad because she was thinking about how she missed her and couldn't go to visit her. She needed someone to care for home. She once paid a man to do for her house but he was a bad man and stole the rent money. It's been 10 years without her Nonnie. This made her very sad. However Shirley's perspective of this was happy saying she could go because her parents were worthy to look after the house. They both had totally different thoughts about the situation.
