Mary was the daughter of William George Fairfax and his second wife Margaret Charters. He lived in Burntisland, Scotland. At the age of ten, she went to school for a year, despite the efforts of her parents to train in domestic chores in a girls' school. She had the support of one of her uncles who encouraged her to learn Latin. When she was about thirteen years old she moved, but she continued with her classes to complete her training as a high class lady, including sewing, piano lessons or painting.
