Cry about the hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that they’re people, too"(Lee,229). In this quote Dolphus Raymond is telling Dill that in this world people will cry about white people hurting other white people, but they will never cry about white people hurting black people.

This image represents the story and message of To Kill a Mockingbird because even though it is simple it has a lot a symbolism. For instance the mockingbird represents innocence and empathy. The noose represents corruption and a disregard for others as people. By having the bird stand on the noose it shows how the two interact with each other one never able to destroy another.

"As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't forget it-whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash" (Lee 253). In this quote Atticus explains how the white man will always have the unfair advantage over the black man due the racist perspectives of many people. And if the white man does anything to further disadvantage the black man, then he is a terrible person.

Theme in Relation to Today

Although To Kill a Mockingbird was set in the Deep South during the 1930's, there are unfortunately parts of the novel, primarily the parts that feature racism and prejudice, that are still present today. While many people in today's society don't have the same opinions and point of views many of the townspeople in Maycomb had, there are still those who do. There have been recent news stories that highlight the racist behaviors and opinions of certain people, whether they are high school seniors or senior citizens. But you don't have to look at the headlines to see the racial prejudice that is still present in today's society. People still hold their own misconceptions and judgements about others due to the color of their skin.

“The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box.”
(Lee 2
This quote symbolises how people bring their resentments wherever they go even if they shouldn't. They won't give up on an idea that they have formed that they are superior than others.
