He describes the plot elements of the book and creates the setting. The suitors: Penelope and Telemachus are introduced. Athena asks Zeus for help to get Odysseus home. Telemachus calls a meeting the following day explaining his troubles and losses, demanding for the suitors to be punished. Telemachus is visited by Athena who guides him to become an adult. Athena spurs Telemachus to make a voyage to search for news about his father. Telemachus sets off on his quiet journey so as to not alert the suitors of his absence.. When he reaches Pylos, he is told by King Nestor the tragedy of Troy. He is also told of two Greek brothers: Agamemnon and Menalaus, who fought and split the army. Nestor sends his son, Pisastratus, to accompany Telemachus to Sparta. Athena reveals her identity from the Mentor and becomes an ossifrage.
Menalaus and Helen greet Pisistratus and Telemachus. They recognize Telemachus as the son of Odysseus. They recount with sadness Odysseus' cunning strategies to infiltrate Troy including the Trojan Horse story. Menelaus describes how he captured Proteus, the old God of the Sea who gave him news of his friends. Hermes tells Calypso to release Odysseus who reluctantly agrees. Odysseus builds a raft to travel across the ocean to see his family. Athena appears in a Phaeacian princess' dream and tells her to do laundry by the river. She sees Odysseus and takes him in by the people on the island. Odysseus walks into town and Athena disguises him (since the Phaeacians don't like foreigners) and guides him to the palace. Odysseus reaches the palace and pleads for Arete to help him. The king, Alcinuous, agrees to help and lends him a ship. The queen notices that Odysseus is wearing the clothes that she made and explains that Nausicaa gave them to him. Telemachus arrives in Phaeacian and has a feast with Alcinuous. Afterwards, Demodocus sings songs about Odysseus and Achilles, along with another about Aphrodite and Ares. Demodocus asks Odysseus of his identity.

#9 Odysseus tells the Phoenicians his story, the lotus eaters, the story of Polyphemus, the cyclops (and how he blinded him after he killed two of his crewmembers). After Odysseus escapes, the cyclops prays for vengeance.

Odysseus' crew travels to the home of Aeolus, a wind god. Aelus gives Odysseus a bag of wind so that he can return to his home. The crew can see Ithica. The crew think that its a fortune, so they open the bag and the wind brings them back to the home of Aeolus. This time, Aeolus sends them away. They go to the Land of Laestrygonia. The Laestrygonians are powerful, cannibal giants, and their king turns Odysseus' men into food. Afterwards, they meet Circe who turns half of Odysseus' men into pigs. Hermes helps Odysseus and helps protect him from Circe. Odysseus manages to coerce Circe into turning his men back into humans. When Odysseus asks Circe for help returning to Ithaca, she tells him to visit Hades and the prophet Tiresias who will help him.

Odysseus reaches the land of the Cimmerians. He performs sacrifices as instructed by Circe. He filled a hole with blood and spirits appeared. The first spirit was one of his men that broke his neck and he asked to be buried. Odysseus talks to Tiresias, the prophet, who told Odysseus of the dangers that he would face. Next was Odysseus' mother who died waiting for his return. He then speaks to other heroes such as Achilles, Ajax, Heracles, King Minos, and Tantalus and learns of their stories.

Odysseus returns to Circe's land and he buries Elpenor, the man who broke his neck. Circe gives more advice, describing the obstacles that he must overcome on his journey to Ithica. Odysseus sets sail, approaching the land of the Sirens. The Sirens try to lure sailors off course and to their deaths. So, as per Circe's advice, Odysseus plugs his men's ears and binds himself to the front of the ship. He hears their seductive song and begs his men to untie him but they don't. Once they pass the island of the Sirens, they have to navigate between Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a six headed monster and Charybdis is a whirlpool that can consume the entire ship whole. Odysseus manages to pass, but loses six men in the process. Next, his crew becomes stranded at the island of Helius because of a storm. As Odysseus is napping, his crew kill the cattle of the sun. When Helius finds out, he demands that Zeus punish them. Zeus destroys the ship and kills everybody but Odysseus. Odysseus floats to Charybdis, and he narrowly escapes again. Odysseus floats to Calypso's island and breaks from the story.

The Pharacians give Odysseus a ship to help him get back to Ithaca. Odysseus falls asleep and the crew carries him to the shore of Ithaca. Poseidon punishes the Phaeacians for allowing Odysseus to get home. He turns the ship to stone and it sinks. Odysseus wakes up on Ithaca but doesn't recognize it because it was disguised by Athena. Athena meets Odysseus disguised and tells him that he is in Ithaca. Odysseus attempts to conceal his true identity from her and says that he is from Crete. Athena praises Odysseus for his cunning nature. The two come up with plans to kill the suitors and Athena disguises Odysseus as an old man, and goes to Sparta to get Telemachus.

Odysseus goes to Eumaeus and is invited into his home. Eumaeus grieves for Odysseus, thinking that he is dead or lost for good. Odysseus predicts that he will return soon. Odysseus fabricates a story about his identity. Odysseus tells him stories and Odysseus manages to finesse this dude into letting him sleep in his hut, while he sleeps outside lollllll.

#15 Athena arrives in Sparta where she finds Telemachus, urging him to go home. She warns him of the ambush, and tells Telemachus how to avoid it. She tells him to go to Eumaeus' house. Odysseus uses his incredible charisma and charm to prompt Eumaeus to let him stay. He shares his story, telling Odysseus how he was born into royalty, but was forced out as a little child. Telemachus approaches Ithaca, and sees a hawk carrying a dove, which is seen as a fortunate sign.

Telemachus returns to Ithaca. He approaches Eumaeus' hut and he goes to tell Penelope that Telemachus has returned. Odysseus reveals himself to Telemachus, and they have an emotional father-son moment. Odysseus recounts his journey to him and tells his plan of neutraliizing the suitors. Before Eumaeus informs Penelope of Telemachus' arrival, a messenger informs the entire palace. The suitors plan their next move since they failed to stop Telemachus.

Telemachus leaves the hut and reunites with Penelope at the palace. Telemachus reveals to her that Odysseus is still alive but refrains from telling her that he has already seen him in Ithaca. Eumaeus and Odysseus head to the palace and are greeted with a not-so-warm welcome. Penelope hears about this and demands that the disguised Odysseus be brought to her.

Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, gets into a fight with another beggar named Irus. The suitors who caused trouble in Odysseus' palace set up a ring for the two to fight in. Not wanting to reveal his true identity, Odysseus knocks out Irus with a single punch. One of the suitors, Amphinomus, offers Odysseus some bread and congratulations. Odysseus tries to warn Amphinomus to leave the palace, but he doesn't listen. Meanwhile, Penelope, Odysseus' wife, is grieving her missing husband and despairs over the unkind suitors. She decides to ask the suitors to bring her gifts to help her choose the one she will marry.

Odysseus and Telemachus lock up most of the weapons as part of their plan. Penelope questions the strange visitor, and they sit down to have a conversation. Odysseus tells her that he once hosted Odysseus in his home and describes the Greek hero, himself, capturing each detail so perfectly that it reduces Penelope to tears. He then tells the story of how he met Odysseus and eventually came to Ithaca. An old nurse washes Odysseus and finds a scar on his leg, recognizing him but promises to keep his identity anonymous. Penelope sets up a competition for  the suitors to decide which will marry her.

Odysseus sees the servants sneaking out to meet the suitors, angering him. However, Athena calms him down by assuring him that he would gaain vengeance. Penelope has trouble sleeping and prays for death rather than being forced into marriage. Odysseus hears her prayer and asks Zeus for a good omen, which Zeus provides with a clap of thunder. The servants and suitors are shown to be acting immorally, and preparation for battle must include intervention by the gods. Athena guarantees success, and Zeus produces a massive roll of thunder.

Penelope announces the competition for her marriage by challenging the suitors to shoot an arrow through twelve axes using a bow. Telemachus tries and fails along with the other suitors. Odysseus tries the bow and succeeds in the challenge.

Odysseus reveals his identity and, along with telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoetius, engages in battle. Telemachus slays Amphinomus. Odysseus kills Antinous and Eurymachus. At the end, Odysseus wins, he demands Telemachus to kill the slave girls that slept with the suitors.

Eurycleia informs Penelope that Odysseus returned and killed all the suitors. She is skeptical, but checks for herself. She finds disguised Odysseus, where he reveals his identity and describes their bed. Acknowledging his existence, Penelope weeps. Odysseus tells her about his adventures and decides to lay low before fighting the Ithacans.

Hermes leads the souls of the dead suitors to Achilles and Agamemnon. Amphimedon tells how they died. Odysseus goes to the countryside to meet Laertes and proves his identity with a moment from his childhood. He also reveals himself to the slaves. The suitors are found to be dead and the people rebel. Athena intervenes and appoints Odysseus as king to make peace.
