Greetings everyone and welcome to RSCH 503: Research Methods and Biostatistics. As Course Chair, I like to stop by and wish students a productive and enjoyable quarter. I live and work in Asheville, North Carolina and have just celebrated my 11th anniversary of working at Drexel as a full-time geographically remote faculty member. Winter is here in the Great Smokey Mountains and, the air is crisp. I often walk my dog, Smoke, in the woods and enjoy the fresh air and all of the sights, sounds, and critters that are all a part of the local nature (lots of bears, wild turkeys, bunnies, and, we definitely avoid the bobcats). I am a forensic psychiatric nurse and all of my research studies have utilized a mixed-methods design (one of the several designs that you will learn about in detail during the quarter ahead) to examine the intrapsychic impact and related behaviors in children who have been exposed to homicide, crime, and/ or sudden violent death. One example of my clinical forensic work includes a trip to Bolivia in 2011 with a team from Drexel CNHP. Since I am a forensic practitioner, my role was to work with psychologists, prosecutors and judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Below is a photo while working with children in the school room of the Domestic Violence Shelter/compound where they were residing (located at over 12 thousand feet in the Andes mountain range!). I got to meet quite a few alpacas during that time and fell in love with eating quinoa! Please help your peers and Dr. Grief learn more about each of you here in the Introductions Padlet. ONWARD YOU GO and Enjoy the course! - Dr. Clements

Hello everyone! My name is Dina Ruzzi and I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA. I currently live in Arlington, Virginia and have been in the D.C. area for a little over two years now. My clinical experience thus far has been working as a pediatric intensive care nurse. I completed my undergraduate degree at Duquesne University where I previously completed an introduction to research course. I learned the basics about research and how to understand it. My biggest concern about taking this course is that although I have taken a course on research, I still have little experience utilizing it. I hope to learn more about the different methods of research and how to utilize this in my current and future practice as a nurse. I am very excited to start this course and get to know all of you!

Here is a picture of myself with my mother in front of the Washington Monument.

Hello, all! My name is Melissa Hermanson, but I go by Leasa (sounds like Lisa). I live in Southern New Jersey and work as the administrator of a three-room, multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center. My background is in critical care nursing.
I have taken research courses previously, and have participated on Nursing Clinical Research teams in the past.
My concerns always include APA format :) and time management. I generally work 6-6, so...I've seen some late nights during this Masters Program.
I've not taken Biostatistics before, so will be interested to learn something new!
My husband and I just celebrated our 24th anniversary, and have two children. Our son is a junior at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA and my daughter is a senior in high school. She has been accepted to Drexel's Westphal School next year - so we'll both be dragons. Luckily, my classes are online so she doesn't have to worry about "Life of the Party" moments :)
I am very proud of the work we do at our center, and my team is AMAZING. We are cheering on the E-A-G-L-E-S this weekend (I'm in the center)!

I work in a progressive care unit as a staff nurse.
I have taken a research course when I was completing my bachelors degree at Bloomsburg University, but it has been a few years since graduating. A concern about taking a research class is my limited experience in utilizing research. I look forward to a better understanding of research methods, and learning more on the biostatics used in research. A fun fact about myself is I love playing basketball and attending workout classes. I look forward to working with everyone! Here is a picture of my husband and I in Italy.

Hi everyone and welcome to our course! I live in Sarasota, Florida--where the snowbirds have just landed! My clinical background is trauma and emergency nursing. I am currently an Administrative Director of Emergency Services as well as the President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties. In my spare time I enjoy running, cycling, and taking trips in our RV to find cooler temperatures. I am originally from Canada and truly miss the seasons. I have three Tibetan Mastiffs--the smallest weighing 130 lbs and the other two are 165 lbs. I love nursing research. Many of my professors in Canada were pioneers in nursing research and encouraged a need for asking "why"? Fun facts--I have lived in Auckland, New Zealand and had a life-changing trip to the Sultanate of Oman where I saw outpost hospitals treating patients with tetanus. Here's a picture of my three "TMs" (Mr. Biggles, Lulu, and Gurkha)

Hi fellow Dragons! My name is Sara. I am currently living in the Baltimore area. I have been here for almost two years and I do love living in an area with so much seafood! I worked in multiple general pediatric units as a travel nurse but now, I am a PICU RN specializing in cardiac care. This course will not be my first research class. My nursing undergrad was research oriented and the first semester consisted of research courses. The course knowledge was also integrated throughout my degree in our research papers. However, that was five years ago, so I am not too sure how much I remember and it was not at a masters level. As far as concerns, like some of my peers, it is taking the information and applying it. I have had very little opportunity to participate in research but maybe this class will inspire me to be more involved and find the opportunities to do so.Fun fact about me, I am French-English bilingual, born in the UK, raised in Montreal, Canada. Dr.Grief, I am sure you are not the only snowbird down there at this time of the year!

Hello there!

My name is Sarah Hefner and I have lived in the Philadelphia area for a little over 2 and half years. I grew up outside of Baltimore, went to Cornell University for my B.S. in Biology, then attended Johns Hopkins Accelerated Nursing program to obtain my B.S.N. I’ve worked in the NICU at CHOP for 2 and a half years and have loved being an ICU nurse!

I took a nursing research course a few years ago while obtaining my B.S.N. We learned about the different types of research and concluded the course by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of a research article. I am a little nervous about taking a research course completely online, but I was also nervous about taking my classes online last quarter and everything worked out well! I really liked that both of my professors emailed us biweekly to clearly define what was expected of us each week. In this class, I hope that I will be able to apply nursing research principles to my clinical experience at the bedside. Additionally, I hope that I will be able to take what I learn in this course and utilize it in my future nursing career.

On my days off I like to work out, cook, read, and hang out with my dog, Tiny. I live close to Wissahickon Park, so Tiny and I hike along the trails where he plays with other dogs.

Here is a picture of my small family! My fiancé Tommy is a biomedical engineer conducting translational research at CHOP on traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest. Our rescue dog, Tiny, is a 65 pound lap dog who loves to snuggle and eat vegetables. Tommy and I are getting married in June, so any wedding planning tips would be greatly appreciated!

I went to UPenn for my undergrad in nursing and so I am very familiar with the West Philadelphia area! After graduation, I moved back to the New York area and started working at White Plains Hospital which is in another suburb outside of the city. I started on a med-surg unit and about a year ago transitioned to the ED! I haven't taken a nursing research course since undergrad and am excited to expand my knowledge, hoping to learn more about how studies are conducted and how to apply the knowledge we gain from research to my clinical practice. I recently adopted a puppy named Wilson, he's 4 months old and he is a lab mix. He keeps me very busy on my days off! I attached a picture of the two of us. Looking forward to beginning the quarter!

My home-base is Connecticut, but due to my continuous travels, I rarely return home. During my BSN, I took a research methods course and enjoyed the literature more than expected. I am concerned about juggling full-time work and heavy course work. I know I can do this and another class, I have to take it one day at a time. I enjoy helping people and have attended two medical mission’s trips to Guatemala. Visiting this medical missions trip ignited a fire in me to want to do more for underserved populations, which is why I chose the Family Nurse Practitioner program. Before becoming a registered nurse, I became a Chef cooking in different venues. Although I have a passion for culinary arts, I did not enjoy it as a career.

Here is a picture of my sisters and I. I graduated from Rutgers University’s School of Nursing with my BSN in 2015 where I completed my first research course. Although I feel like I have completed countless research-based papers, some of the research terminology tends to confuse me! I remember experiencing this in my first research course. I hope to gain a better understanding for research in nursing now that I have experience in the nursing field as compared to when I took my first research course as an undergraduate student. I have been a registered nurse for three years at Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, NJ, working on a 36-bed, cardiac-telemetry and stroke unit. In addition, I worked as a nurse intern at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ for one year on a telemetry/step-down unit. It’s safe to say that cardiac nursing is my “thing!” I am currently enrolled in the AGACNP track and hope to pursue a career in cardiology—although, life is crazy, and you never know where you may end up! I am looking forward to furthering my knowledge and education in nursing and meeting new people along the way! I’ve included pictures of myself, my boyfriend of five years--Greg!

I work on a high risk labor and delivery unit in D.C., where I have worked for the last 3 and a half years. Prior to this, I spent one year on a medical surgical unit at the same hospital in D.C. I grew up in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area of Pennsylvania, about two hours north of Philadelphia and went to nursing school at Wilkes University. I have previously taken a research course in undergraduate nursing school, but this will be my first research course in this program. I am interested to learn more about the analysis of research and to form a better understanding of research methods that I may utilize during my future graduate courses. I’m looking forward to working with everyone and wish you all a great semester! Attached is a photo of myself and my mother at the nurses memorial in Arlington, VA.

I have worked at level one trauma centers and miss the ER, but I think the ICU experience is really important as I pursue my Acute Care NP. I started as an associates degree RN back in 2008 and got my Bachelors degree online several years later through Drexel. I think I remember taking a research course but they all seemed like research courses. My friend compares ER nursing as "fast food" to ICU nursing as "fine dining," I am hoping this class will be the same, like what I was taught before was more a down and dirty research class and this class will make me more eloquent.
My husband (see photo) and I will celebrate our one year wedding anniversary on St. Patrick's day, he is an ICU nurse (different hospital) as well - coming up on a year in April. We have season tickets to the Golden Knights hockey team and our bird and dog that keep us on our toes.

Hello everyone!!
My name is LaKeisha Burks. I currently reside in Baltimore, Maryland where I was born and raised. I agree with one of my fellow Dragons that mentioned being around the seafood. I lived in Southern Maryland for most of my adult life and it is great to be back home where crabs never "go out of season!" I have taken a few research courses while in a RN-MSN program focused on education. Needless to say, I stopped after obtaining my BSN to figure out what path I truly wanted to take in nursing. I am not sure how much I remember from those courses as they have been about 4-5 years ago. My concerns with this course is the amount of reading/heavy course work while working full-time hours. In taking this course, I hope to gain a better appreciation for research. This will hopefully make it seem less cumbersome; thus, inspire me to get involved in a project. Fun facts: I am a die-hard Ravens fan! I have 2 kids (24 and 20) and 2 grandkids (4 and 6 months). I go by MiMi. I have included a picture of me that I recently took in Nova Scotia while on a week long trip with my ex-husband of 18 years. I know right! Looking forward to another successful quarter!!

Hi everyone!

My name is Nicole Swigart and I live in Lancaster, Pa with my husband and two boys who are four and one. I currently work as a staff nurse in an Emergency Department right outside of Philadelphia. I am my second quarter of the Family Nurse Practitioner program here at Drexel and have been very surprised at how manageable but still challenging the program has been. I have taken a research course previously while obtaining my undergraduate. But, taking a “Biostatistics” class is very intimidating. Statistics is not my strong suit so that worries me a bit when identifying outliers and understanding numbers in reference to each study. I am looking forward to becoming proficient in comprehending each study and also being able to decipher the different research methods and more. Attached is a picture of myself and my family which was taken this past summer. Nice to meet all of you!

Hi everyone! My name is Kaitlyn Hall and I live in West Chester, PA with my husband and our two Labrador Retrievers- we have a chocolate lab named Porter and a yellow lab named Stella :) I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2014 and have been working in a pediatric CICU ever since. I have not taken any research courses since undergrad, but I am excited to re- familiarize myself with such an important and large part of what we do every day as nurses! I hope to learn about how to become more involved with conducting/applying research during my time as a bedside nurse so that I am better prepared as a future pediatric NP. My concerns for this class are similar to my peers- taking classes solely online is still pretty new to me (this is only my second quarter) but luckily everything went smoothly this past fall, so fingers crossed for another great semester! I am excited to learn from and alongside with everyone in this course! P.S. here is a picture of my husband and I on our wedding day this past summer in the Outer Banks in NC :)

Hi!

My name is Rosalie Sidari. I recently got married so I'm currently in the process of transitioning out of my maiden name "DiMaggio. I'm located outside or Reading, Pennsylvania. I have worked on a Cardiac Intermediate Unit for the last 3 years and have loved it! I'm the unit's EBP/Research Resource Nurse and I'm a member of the Organizational Research Council. I have been fortunate to have great leadership role models, which has led me to take the next step to attain my MSN focusing on Leadership in Health Systems Management. I took my first research course as an undergraduate in nursing school. I also recently attended an Evidence-Based Practice and Research Internship that my hospital offers. From there I developed and EBP Project that I presented regionally and nationally at the University of Iowa and NTI this past year. I'm very passionate about Evidence Based Practice and therefore I'm eager to learn more about the a major necessity of determining EBP, which is nursing research! I have two yellow labs, Mila and Maisie - and my husband and I treat them like they are our kids! We love going to the beach in Avalon with our dogs and spend time with our families.

Here is a photo of us: this past September we got married in Avalon and made sure to have our dogs in it!

Intro - Kate Barcoski

Hello everyone! My name is Kaitlin Barcoski and I attended Drexel for my BSN, and am now pursuing my MSN to be a Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner! I live in Philadelphia not too far from Drexel’s main campus. This will be my second research course, as I took a research course during undergrad (which feels like so long ago, even though it wasn’t). Thinking about my previous research course, I remember being rather nervous about what to expect before beginning that course. I feel a little more prepared about what to expect this time, but for some reason I seem to find research courses intimidating…yet I am ready to accept the challenge! I hope to learn the many types and approaches to research, and to gain a better understanding of them! I am a pediatric nurse at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on the surgical/trauma unit. I have worked at CHOP for over 7 years now. I love working with children and could not picture myself with any other population! I also love animals and travelling. The picture I shared is from my wedding in the Poconos, which was this past September. I look forward to working with all of you this term!

Hi! My name is Catherine Lemanowicz, but I go by Cat. I currently live in Old City Philadelphia, and I am originally from Monmouth County, NJ. I graduated from Uconn in 2013 as a double major in Allied Health Sciences and Urban and Community Studies. I decided to go to nursing school to have more direct patient care and completed an accelerated program in 2015 at JFK Muhlenberg in Plainfield, NJ. I went straight into OR nursing and worked in an adult hospital for 2 years while completing my BSN online through Drexel. I began working at CHOP in the operating room in the summer of 2017. I am part of the orthopedic surgery team where I scrub and circulate everything from spines to fractures, but I am trained in all of the other surgical services. I am now pursuing my Master's in Clinical Research. I have previously taken research courses, but nothing at this level. I am both excited and anxious to learn more about the research field. My biggest struggle in school thus far has been writing so I am hoping this course will help me improve upon those skills. I have included a picture of myself with my boyfriend from one of the many (8) weddings we have gone to this year.

My name is Nithya and I live in the Northern Virginia area right outside of Washington DC. I'm originally from the Boston area, and the snow that got dumped on us this weekend made it feel like home. I've been working in a Peds ER since I graduated a second-degree Nursing Program three years ago and now also work at a Peds Urgent Care. I'm currently in the Dual track Acute/Primary Care PNP program. This is my second ever research class, with the only other one in the nursing program. I'm worried about my research abilities and being able to discern good research by the design. I hope that this class will be able to help me understand which articles have higher validity, reliability and dependable conclusions from solid data.

My partner and I like to play frisbee in our free time, all through we both like to stay in when it's this cold:) He and I are getting married this year so we have a lot of busy and exciting times coming up as well! Looking forward to another fruitful quarter.
