Skill - ability to self organise, really need to be organised in yourself to lead others - to be convincing. Demonstrate you know what you are talking about. Attention to detail.
Be an observant person. Spend a lot of time listening and observing. Quiet people are often great at observing and seeing who are connectors in community, quiet achievers, what needs doing and what are the gaps (personality type).
Self knowledge - why do you want to contribute, serve? career progression? If to serve then you can be open the way you develop mind, skills, interpersonal. people have different work styles. need strong interpersonal.
Boundaries - help they don't limit. Then people can self organise themselves. Listen and feel for culture in the group. Has to be a real need. Be prepared to lead as a leader or a supporter. Sometimes you are a contributor not a leader. Leader one situation and another. To lead is to serve.
Innovative ideas based on the community. Leader good to have innovative thinking and ideas to make a plan for the community. Important - knowledge, people around the table each of them do bring totally different knowledge, skills and experiences.
Big picture thinkers and detail people at the other end. Awareness that not just talking to one person. Very different. Leader has knowledge and skill to bring that together. De bono hats - the thinker, the person who will analyse, the cautious person. respect the gifts that people bring.

Knowledge and skills you wish you had had. I wish I had a better understanding of how different levels of government work. How that different bureacracies work and how to tap into.
Value of mentors and supportive networks and seek them out. Especially for young women.
Wish I had a good knowledge/understanding of different groups/ideas - networking.
Working in a diverse community, wish had broader networks outside of community. Creating better environments.
Local Council connection early on and how to build that. Local police. Local sporting clubs. Services e.g. health/youth.
Value of networking and understood it. Technique of developing networks - how to go about it e.g. lets have coffee!
Value of seeking other ideas. Often enthusiastic about doing when you get started.
One of things leaders do is create stable and trusting environment that other people flourish in.
Don't see the environments that leaders set up. Part of what you will learn is creating that environment.
Project planning and communication.
Social media - knowledge of how to use it to extend reach and understand how to use it and get the power of it. Understand various platforms etc.
Project management and time management. Do need to understand detail and roles of people you are working with. Need to understand the roles others are doing - how to assist or get out of their way.
Communication channels - people have to skill up to communicate in various ways e.g. sms. Understanding on how you use volunteers. People will often want to be asked to get involved but might not put their hand up. You need to work out what it is you need done and then you need to ask someone. Set up volunteer program in a way that people can understand and manage and then step back.
How to delegate otherwise you end up doing it all yourself.
Most people are good people but it is tricky working in community - people can get offside easily. Diplomacy.
Know what will motivate people e.g. some people but not all people want to be thanked a lot. Different for different people. Rewards - there for purposes other than remuneration. A 'carrot' - what is the pay off.
Time management. Planning all stages of the project e.g. if you miss something, like collecting rubbish at the end of the event, you end up doing it yourself! Working out some roles/tasks that you are better just paying someone to do. Knowing how much time something is going to take. Risk burning out willing workhorses. Need to be mindful of people's capacity to keep going and remain interested. Always asking the same people. Spread the work. Making people feel they have owned the ideas. How to get people engaged. Burn out factor needs to be recognised. If high energy person, then you kind of expect others will have the same energy and often not the case. Can leave a trail of burned out people.

Learning experiences - small group gatherings, opportunities to chat to like minded people.
Co-design activity with community - very important for diverse community.
Knowing more about how local Council works - guest speakers. Within or outside the program - internship, actual experience doing. e.g. Living and learning centre, or a group. real work experience with another group.
for people to understand about Council, going to a Council meeting maybe not helpful. Panel from across different parts of Council - e.g. eco dev, comm dev, urban design - groups relevant to projects that people might do.
Overview of structure of local government. Maybe a case study. An understanding of how many different departments might be involved. Q and A.
The environment is important e.g. relevant to the learning and unpacking the subject to make it relevant to people there.
Physical experiences outside of your usual experience/area - impactful. Come to it with fresh eyes.
Myers-Brigg or a facilitated session that helps people to understand themselves and that everyone has different perspective/style of operating. In understanding self we understand others.
Mentoring, learning by doing.
Celebration of the learning afterwards.
Processing learning through reflection. Reflection at the beginning of the meeting - purposeful - in the place, in the topic, with the people.
